Friday night squad shakes up leaderboard at Bucharest Open



    Locals Catalin Gheorghe, Viorel Simut and Greek Vassilis Stefopoulos move into 2nd, 3rd and 4th place; Giannis Stathatos of Greece leads 119-player field into last day of qualifying; cut for 22nd place is 1240 (206.67 ave.)

    2012BOCatalinGheorghe.jpg2012BOGiannisStathatos.jpgThe qualifying lead of the Bucharest Open almost changed hands in Friday night's Squad 20 when four players rolled scores of 1342 and better at IDM Club in Bucharest, Romania.

    Catalin Gheorghe (pictured left) of Romania used high games of 267 and 258 to lead the squad and to tie tournament leader Giannis Stathatos (right) of Greece at 1375, an average of 229.17. The Greek national team member retained the pole position by virtue of the higher last game, 226 to 204.

    Gheorghe moved into second place and was followed by fellow countryman Viorel Simut (below left), who leaped from 10th to third place with 1359 including a 268 high game and a pair of 240s. Vassilis Stefopoulos of Greece used a two pairs of 236 and 234 games for 1351 to overtake fourth place.

Fifth place belonged to England's Matt Miller (right), who led Squad 19 with 1350 powered by a 257 opening game and a 279 in the last game.

    Rounding out the top 8, who will bypass the first round of the finals, were Romeo Gagenoiu of Romania and PBA bowler Ronnie Russell, United States, with 1336 and 1323, respectively.

    Stathatos, Gagenoiu, Russell and Miller are automatically qualified for Sunday's finals by virtue of finishing 1-4 after Thursday's qualifying.

    Patsaouras Epameinondas of Greece and Anze Grabrijan (right) of Slovenia, who led Squad 17 and 18 with 1288 and 1268, respectively, finished the penultimate qualifying day in 14th and 17th place.

    Two-time European Bowling Tour's women's point ranking champion and long-time Danish national team member, Bettina Lund (below right), Denmark, is the only woman in the top 22 in 16th place with 1275 including 48 pins handicap. With 20 out of 24 qualifying squads completed, Kostas Kiryakou of Cyprus holds the 22nd and last place to advance with 1240 and an average of 206.67.

    2012EBT18BettinaLund.jpgQualifying continues Saturday with Squads 21-24 scheduled for 10.30 a.m., 2.30, 6.30 and 10.30 p.m. CET+1 and concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for early Sunday morning.

    2012BucharestOpenLogo_small.jpg The 3rd IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open will be held Nov. 19-25 at 14-lane IDM Club in Bucharest, Romania (Oil Pattern). The tournament offers total prize fund of 15.000 Euro in the open division and additional 1.800 Euro for bowlers with less than 180 average.

    The tournament winner will receive the 2.500 Euro top prize, the runner-up earns 1.500 Euro and the third and fourth place finishers get 1.000 Euro apiece.

    The qualifying of the Bucharest Open runs from Monday, Nov. 19 through Saturday, Nov. 24 and concludes with Squad 24 scheduled for 10.30 p.m. local time CET+1 and the Desperado Squad following immediately. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game.

    A total of 24 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, Nov. 25 including the top 4 of a separate leaderboard of the squads on Monday through Thursday, the top 18 of the overall qualifying standings and the top 2 of the one-game Desperado Squad.

    Players seeded 9th to 24th will bowl six games scratch with the top 8 advancing to the second round. The remaining 16 players will bowl another six games scratch to cut to the top eight, who will determine the champion in best-of-three games match play format.
