43rd Brunswick Ballmaster Open to kick off 2013 European Bowling Tour season

The 43rd Brunswick Ballmaster Open is the season-opening event of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the first of six "EBT Gold" events, the second-highest out four EBT categories. The tournament will be held from Friday Jan. 4 through Sunday Jan. 13, 2013 at 36-lane Tali Bowling Center in Finland's capital city Helsinki.
Players will compete for total prize money of 90.300 Euro with 12.000 Euro going to the winner, 8.000 to the runner-up and 4.000 and 3.000 to the third and fourth place finishers, respectively. Low to cash is 48th place, worth 1.100 Euro.
In addition, the 2013 BBO offers a 20.000 Euro Extra Prize for a 300 game thrown on the final day (Jan. 13). In the event that a 300 game will be rolled, the total prize fund will be more than 110.000 Euro.
Since the inception of the European Bowling Tour in the year 2000, the Ballmaster has been the season-opening event of the Tour.
PBA bowlers dominated the Ballmaster in the past three years with two-time PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi winning back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010 while Bill O'Neill (pictured left) became the first U.S. winner in the history of the Ballmaster by defeating fellow four-time PBA champion Mike Fagan, 236-224, to win the 42nd edition in 2012.

In 2012, a Suzuki Hayabusa worth approx. 18.000 Euro was offered for a 300 game on the final day. Dominic Barrett (left) of England shot 299 in Round Robin to miss the Hayabusa by mere one pin. Swede Erik Andersin (right) had the tournament's only 300 game in qualifying and pocketed 4.640 Euro for accomplishing the feat.
Due to an agreement between the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) and the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA), the Ballmaster will award a PBA international title, if won by a PBA member or a PBA international member.
Qualifying (six games, unlimited re-entries) of the 2013 Brunswick Ballmaster Open runs through Saturday, Jan. 12, and ends with Squad 15 and the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad slated for 11.30 p.m. local time (CET +1) on Saturday night. Women will receive 8 pins handicap each game (up to 292 - max score is 300), a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

A total of 48 players - the top 44 from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad - will qualify for the finals on Sunday, Jan. 13. No byes will be given in this tournament.
All 48 finalists will bowl 8 games from scratch with the top 16 advancing to the match play portion. Those 16 will bowl 15 games of round robin match play (no position round will be played) with the pinfall of Round 1 being carried over.
Players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won and 15 points for a tied match. The top 4 players after 23 games including bonus pins will determine the champion in a stepladder final.
The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, the 12.000 Euro top prize and 150 EBT and 50 WBT ranking points.
The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 stops in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, five Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.
The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the Brunswick Ballmaster Open gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.
The top 12 men and the top 12 women at the end of the 2013 season qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.
The 43rd Brunswick Ballmaster Open is also the third event of the 2013 World Bowling Tour, which got underway in 2012 with the PBA World Championship and the Qatar Bowling Open.
The 2013 WBT consists of 15 tournaments in America , Asia, Europe and Australia - six in the United States and one each in Australia, Austria, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Qatar and Thailand.
Players earn ranking points based on how they finish in each event. The current points system is based on a continuous two-year cycle, so points earned in 2011 and 2012 are added to points earned in 2013 to determine the points list.
The top three men and top three women will be invited to compete in the World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the Professional Bowlers Association which will be held in conjunction with the 5th PBA World Series of Bowling in November 2013.
