2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg Mary Louise Young of Houston, Texas, was honored for her 50th United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships appearance Thursday evening at the National Bowling Stadium.

Young, 76, accepted her plaque from David Biber, tournament manager for the USBC Women's Championships, which began at Reno's National Bowling Stadium on March 16 and continues through July 2.

Young first began bowling in 1948, and competed in her first national tournament in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1954. She brings a 157 average to the competition.

Upon receiving her plaque, Young commented, "I've never been one to set goals, but four years ago I did decide to go for my 50th tournament. Now that I've made it, I've decided to go for 60."

Previously honored for a half-century of participation at this year's Women's Championships were Mildred Anderson of Rochester Hills, Mich., who celebrated her 50th event on June 8, and Dorothy Sternberg of Indianapolis who was honored for her 50th on May 13. On April 30, USBC recognized Mini Tvaska of St. Petersburg, Fla., for her 60th consecutive appearance, which is the current record for active participants.

Although Young currently owns and operates an antique shop in Houston, she once owned a bowling center in town. She also served on the Brunswick corporate staff, which gave her the opportunity to teach bowling "all over the country." Young is a member of the Houston and Texas bowling halls of fame.

"I've met so many friends and gone to so many places, thanks to bowling," she remembers with a smile. "There's just no other sport like it."

The Women's Championships features nearly 55,000 bowlers from all 50 states, as well as Australia, Japan, Canada, Bermuda, England, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, in a quest for approximately $2.6 million in prize money.
