Missouri bowler takes second place in Classic Singles with 'wrong ball' at USBC Women's Championships

2006USBCWomenShannonSellens.jpg Shannon Sellens brought the "wrong ball" to the competition, which ironically enabled her to take over second place in Classic Division Singles at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

"I brought four balls, but somehow I left the one I wanted at home," Sellens said, shaking her head in disbelief. "When I accidentally brought another ball in its place, I thought why not, I'll use it."

Her "mistake" resulted in a 768 series (245, 255, 268), just three pins short of leader Karen Stroud in Classic Division Singles with 771. She also moved into ninth place in Classic All-Events with 2,016.

The 23-year-old Kansas City, Mo. resident, who recently graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, with a degree in communications studies, said her Friday performance was the most comfortable she's ever experienced at the Women's Championships.

"I just stayed ahead of the transition and kept the ball in play," said the former collegiate bowler. "I was very lucky to be bowling with Nicole Banks and Sarah Kelly, who I had competed against in college, when I bowled for Wichita State. They're very good at reading the lane conditions, and that helped an awful lot."

Sellens, an advertising and public relations coordinator for a Kansas City casino, had intended to bowl in her third Queens this year, but missed it because she couldn't take off from her new job. She made the cut to match play both in 2004 and 2005.
