The BROOKLYN STyLES, sparked by No. 5 draft pick Jason Sterner (left) of McDonough, Ga., and PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (right) of Ocala, Fla., captured the top stepladder position in the Professional Bowlers Association League's Don Carter qualifying round Thursday, and held a modest 28-pin lead over the New York City WTT KingPins for the overall standings heading into Friday's final qualifying round.

The BROOKLYN STyLES, owned by Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams, finished Thursday's Carter round with a five-player, eight-game total of 9,527 pins to earn the No. 1 position in the stepladder finals by 247 pins over the KingPins, a team owned by women's sports icon Billie Jean King. Comedian Chris Hardwick's Silver Lake Atom Splitters qualified third in the Carter round.

In the battle for the five positions in the Thunderbowl Finals round, which will air live on ESPN Sunday at noon ET, the STyLES advanced from third to first with a total of 27,274 pins for a combined total of 120 games bowled by the five team members – a team average of 227.28.

The KingPins moved into second place with 27,246 pins while the previous leader, Jerome Bettis' Motown Muscle, dropped into third place.

The top five teams for Sunday's team stepladder finals will be decided after another eight-game round of qualifying during the Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship Friday morning.

"It's fun bowling in team competition because, if you have a bad game, other guys can pick you up," said BROOKLYN STyLES team leader Sean Rash (left), the reigning PBA Player of the Year. "It's nice to have support from your peers, which you don't often get in singles."

Rash's team got a big lift Thursday from Sterner, a non-title winner who was picked by Rash in the fifth round of the PBA League draft in November. Sterner averaged 252.63 Thursday, third-best in the Don Carter Classic individual competition.

Williams, the winningest player in PBA history with 47 PBA Tour titles, was right behind with 1,950 pins and four-time Tour winner Ryan Shafer (left) of Horseheads, N.Y., added 1,946 pins. Rash (1,817) and Ryan Ciminelli (right, 1,793) rounded out the STyLES' total.

"Everyone knows I watch scores around me more than I need to," Rash said. "It's a bad habit of mine, but Walter Ray was only a couple of lanes away, and my wife and parents were keeping track of what the other guys were doing, so I was just trying to keep everyone motivated.

"At the end of the day we're all out here to compete for the singles titles," Rash said, "but the team is a bonus, and I'm definitely looking forward to having our team make it to the live TV show on Sunday."

PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (pictured left) just hopes Rash's team qualifies second. Weber, who leads the KingPins, is new to the team aspect, but is enjoying it.

"(My wife) Tracy is kind of keeping all of us informed, and I'm watching as scores are being posted," Weber said of the PBA League race. "Even though singles means a little more to me, my mind is still focused on bowling the best I can for the team. Even if you're having a bad game, you're trying to trying to bowl the best you can for the team.

"I'm enjoying it," he grinned. "We have qualified for three TV shows as a team, and we're pretty much locked into the live show Sunday. But right now we're second, and you always want to be No. 1."

Also Thursday, former Wichita State University collegiate star John Szczerbinski (right) of North Tonawanda, N.Y., led the Don Carter Classic eight-game qualifying round with 2,060 pins. The top 16 individuals advanced to a nine-game match play round Thursday night to determine the top two players who will bowl for the Don Carter Classic title.

The PBA League Carter round stepladder finals and the Don Carter Classic championship match will be contested on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Thunderbowl Lanes. The finals will air on ESPN on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. ET.

The final round of qualifying events in the Detroit Winter Swing is set for Friday when the final eight games of Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship qualifying will determine the 16 players who will advance to the match play finals in that event. The Anthony qualifying round also will include the fourth and final round of PBA League qualifying.

All preliminary rounds of Winter Swing competition are being covered live, exclusively on PBA's online bowling channel, Xtra Frame.
