Australia's Andrew Frawley leads H.H. Emir's Cup 2013 after first block of qualifying

    Andrew Frawley (pictured left) of Australia took the early lead in the qualifying of the His Highness Emir's Cup 2013 Monday at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha, Qatar.

    The 48-year-old former Australian national team member averaged 239.13 and toppled 1913 pins in the first of two eight-game blocks in Squad A including games of 191, 255, 222, 225, 257, 265, 241 and 257.

    2013EmirCupJassemDarwish.jpgFrawley outaveraged his nearest competitor, Jassem Darwish (right) of Kuwait, by twelve pins. Darwish used high games of 258, 245 and 242 to sit in second place with 1817 (227.13). Third place belonged to UAE's Shaker Al-Hassan, who hit 1800 on the nose (225.00).

    Placed four and five belonged to Finnish bowlers Perttu Jussila and Tony Ranta, who checked in with 1757 and 1721, respectively.

    Defending champion Kim Bolleby of Sweden landed in eighth place with 1659 and an average of 215.13.

    The players of Squad A will return on Tuesday afternoon for the second block. Squad B bowlers roll the first block on Wednesday and the second block on Thursday.

    The H.H. Emir's Cup 2013 will be held from Sunday, Feb. 24 through Saturday, March 2 at Qatar Bowling Center, a 32-laner in Doha, Qatar.

    Players will compete for total prize money of US$77.800 with 25,000 Dollar going to the winner, 12,000 to the runner-up and 4,000 each to the third and fourth place finishers.

    Qualifying (total 16 games) runs over four days (Feb. 25-28; 8 games per day) and will be played in two squads (A and B) with maximum 64 players per squad. A player can choose to play in either Squad A or B or in both squads.

    Total 36 players including the top 28 qualifiers, the next two Qatari youth players, the next two Qatari bowlers and the top four players from the Desperado Squad, will advance to the finals on March 1 & 2. The top six qualifiers earn one bye.

    The other 30 players will bowl 8 games scratch with the top 10 advancing to the next round. Those ten and the top six qualifiers will roll another eight-game block scratch to determine the top four players who will clash in the semifinals.

    The No. 1 seed meets the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed the on the No. 3 seed over two games with the total pin fall to determine the winners, who will bowl for the title and 25 Grand in the two-game total pins championship match.
