England's Kirsten Penny earns gold in Women's Singles at 6th Commonwealth Championship

    Malaysia's Siti Shazwani takes silver medal; Lisa John (ENG) and Sue Abela (MLT) share the bronze medal

    2013CTBCKirstenPenny.jpgEngland's Kirsten Penny (pictured) posted a 1301 six-game series, an average of 216.83, Tuesday afternoon at Pins Lincoln Bowling Center in Auckland, New Zealand, en route to win the gold medal in Women's Singles at the VI Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship.

    The multiple World and European champion rebounded from a 147 low game with 245, 204, 249, 214 and 242 and was the lone of the 18 women from nine countries, who averaged over 200.

    Siti Shazwani of Malaysia used high games of 222, 212 and 207 to claim the silver with 1188 total and an average of 198. Penny's fellow countrywoman Lisa John tied Malta's Sue Abela for third place to share the bronze medal with 1183 (197.16).

    The Championship resumes at 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday with the Women’s Doubles, while the Men's Doubles event is scheduled at 2.30 p.m.

    2013CTBCLogo_small.jpg This is the sixth edition of the biennial championship which is open to all federations that are members of the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Federation (CTBF). Each team consists of two men and two women (Gibraltar has sent two men only).

    Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Mixed Teams, All Events and Masters.
