England's Dominic Barrett wins qualifying at H.H. Emir's Cup 2013

    Finn Mika Koivuniemi wins Thursday's High Series Award; Barrett leads a group of 36 players into the finals; the top six player earn one bye; cut for 28th place is 3243 (202.69 average)

Emir's Cup 2013 at Qatar Bowling Center in Doha.

    The one-time PBA champion closed out his set on Thursday with 266, 256 and 289 (811) to regain the pole position and to lead a group of 36 players into the finals on Friday and Saturday.

    Two-time PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi (right), a native Finn, who lives in the United States, earned the $200 High Series Award for his 1914 series (239.25) but had to settle for second place with 3775 (235.94).

Three-time European Bowling Tour point ranking winner, Paul Moor (right) of England, maintained fourth place with 3596 and was followed by current Asian point ranking leader Yousif Falah of Bahrain in fifth place with 3565.

    World Games champion Manuel Otalora of Colombia to the sixth and last place to earn the bye with 3554 and an average of 222.13. The best local bowler, Mansour Al-Awamy finished qualifying in tenth place with 3469.

    Benshir Layoso of the Philippines took the 28th and last place to advance with 3243 and an average of 202.69.

    The top 28 will be joined in the finals by Qatari youth bowlers Jassem Al-Deyab and Abdulrahman Jaidah and Qataris Zakareya Al-Zaqari and Khaled Al-Doseri, who earned the four wild cards, as well as Mohammed Al-Saud, Saudi Arabia (227), Ahmed Saleh Al-Baker, Qatar (216), Fahad Al-Rageeb, Kuwait (213) and Mahdi Assaed, Bahrain (209), who survived the one-game Desperado Squad.

    All but the top six players will return to the Qatar Bowling Center Friday at 4 p.m. local time for the first round of the finals. The second round and the playoffs will conclude the tournament on Saturday.

    The H.H. Emir's Cup 2013 will be held from Sunday, Feb. 24 through Saturday, March 2 at Qatar Bowling Center, a 32-laner in Doha, Qatar.

    Players will compete for total prize money of US$77.800 with 25,000 Dollar going to the winner, 12,000 to the runner-up and 4,000 each to the third and fourth place finishers.

    Qualifying (total 16 games) ran over four days (Feb. 25-28; 8 games per day) and has been played in two squads (A and B) with maximum 64 players per squad. A player could choose to play in either Squad A or B or in both squads.

    Total 36 players including the top 28 qualifiers, the next two Qatari youth players, the next two Qatari bowlers and the top four players from the Desperado Squad, advanced to the finals on March 1 & 2. The top six qualifiers earned one bye.

    The other 30 players will bowl 8 games scratch with the top 10 advancing to the next round. Those ten and the top six qualifiers will roll another eight-game block scratch to determine the top four players who will clash in the semifinals.

    The No. 1 seed meets the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed the on the No. 3 seed over two games with the total pin fall to determine the winners, who will bowl for the title and 25 Grand in the two-game total pins championship match.
