Costa Rica, Guatemala win the Trios titles at X Central American Games

The Costa Rican men and the women from Guatemala captured the title in the Trios events on the fourth day of bowling competition in the X Central American Games 2013 at Bol Cariari in San José, Costa Rica. It was the fourth gold medal for the host country and the second for Guatemala.
Alejandro Reyna, Mario Valverde and Alberto Lizano (pictured left, l-r) posted a 3885 series, an average of 215.83, including a high game of 727 on the WTBA Montreal lane conditioning pattern to beat out their compatriots for the gold medal by 53 pins.
James Stanley, Jose A. Garcia and Rodolfo Madriz took the silver medal with 3832 (212.89). Guatemala's Armando Batres, Hugo Jimenez and Andres Herrera were 184 pins behind to take the bronze medal with 3648 (202.67).
Costa Rica's Reyna (1234) topped Guatemala's Herrera (1203) by 31 pins in the Trios event to overtake the lead in Men's All Events (combined results in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles Trios and Team) after 24 of 30 games with 5100 total and an average of 212.50.
Herrera slipped to second place with 5096 and was followed by team mate Batres in third place with 5086 and Costa Rica's Lizano (rolled the highest series of the Games, 1406) and Valverde, who sit in fourth and fifth place with 5083 and 5074, respectively.
On the women's side Guatemala's Sofia Granda (1324) led her team mates Pamela Monzon and Ximena Soto (pictured right, l-r) to the Trios gold medal finishing with 3593 total and an average of 199.61.
Costa Rica's Viviana Delgado, Joselyn Valverde and Maria Ramirez were 32 pins behind to earn the silver medal with 3561 (197.83). The bronze medal went to El Salvador's Marcela Sanchez, Lys Harrison and Edith Quintanilla, who checked in with 3409 (189.39).
Eloina Valle, Sarah Rodriguez and Gladys Rojas (3340, 185.56) missed the first medal for Honduras in fourth place by 69 pins.
Former World Games champion Granda rolled the highest individual series for the second consecutive day to leap three spots and to overtake the lead in Women's All Events with 4934 and an average of 205.58. Singles champion Quintanilla is just one pin behind in second place with 4933.
Costa Rica's Delgado is another 52 pins behind in third place with 4881, while previous leader Monzon slipped to fourth place with 4876. Fifth place Ramirez is mere 16 pins off the pace for the medals with 4665.
Competition resumes on Saturday, March 16 with the Team event featuring both the Stockholm (games 1-3) and Montreal (games 4-6) pattern. The fifth and last six-game block will also decide the medals in All Events.
The top 8 men and the top 8 women in All Events will advance to the Masters finals in best-of-three games format, which will conclude the Central American Games bowling competition on Sunday, March 17.
The X Central American Games 2013 will be held from March 3-17, 2013 in San José, Costa Rica. After two consecutive editions without being invited, Tenpin Bowling celebrates its return at the quadrennial Games. The bowling competition takes place at Bol Cariari from March 12-17.
51 bowlers - 27 men and 24 women - from five countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and the host country, Costa Rica) will compete for the medals in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Trios, Teams, individual All Events, Country All Events, and Masters on the 34-feet Stockholm and the 41-feet Montreal lane conditioning pattern.
