Malta and France win the Doubles titles at Mediterranean Challenge Cup

    Turkey's Özoğluuntur, Italy's Bellomonte lead in All Events after 12 of 24 games

    2013MCCTizianaCarannanteSueAbela.jpgMalta and France captured the gold medals in women's and men's Doubles in the 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup Thursday at Bowling Klub 300 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

    Malta's Sue Abela, who has medaled in all sixteen MCCs, and team mate Tiziana Carannante (pictured right, r-l) closed out their six-game series with a big 456 game to cruise to the title with 2412 total and an average of 201. The duo was the lone women's team that averaged over 200.

    Carannante led the team with the field-best 1238 series including six games between 201 and 218 and Abela, who earned the bronze medal in Singles the day before, contributed 1174 including a 256 final game.

    Singles silver medalist Ebru Özoğluuntur and Adile Michajlow took another silver medal for Turkey with 2339, while Singles champion Helga Di Benedetto and Fausta Regali earned bronze with 2338.

    Özoğluuntur used a 1210 series in Doubles to overtake the lead in All Events after 12 of 24 games with 2423 total and an average of 201.92. Di Benedetto slipped to second place with 2409 (200.75), while Abela remained in third place with 2377 (198.08).

    2013MCCNicolasMarchandJulienSermand.jpgOn the men's side, Julien Sermand and Nicolas Marchand (r-l) rebounded from a slow start (365) with games of 427, 426, 451, 424 and 456 to claim the gold medal in men's Doubles with 2549 and an average of 212.42.

    Marchand set the pace with 1307 (217.83), the lone 1300-plus series of the day, and Sermand added 1242.

    Italy's Maurizio Celli and Singles bronze medalist Francesco Bellomonte joined forces to take the silver medal with 2458. Bronze went to Francisco Rodriguez and Javier Moreno of Spain, who totaled 2419 to land in third place.

    Bellomonte used his 1223 series to overtake the lead in All Events with 2527 total and an average of 210.58 for 12 games. Singles silver medalist Anže Grabrijan was mere two pins behind in second place with 2525 with Singles champion Justin C. Scicluna further six pins behind in third place with 2519.

    2013MCCLogo.jpg The 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup 2013 will be held from April 9-14, 2013 at Bowling Klub 300, a 16-laner in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Each country is represented by a team of up to two female and two male competitors.

    50 players, 26 men and 24 women, from 13 countries - Croatia, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and host Slovenia - compete in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Team, All Events and Masters.

    The Mediterranean Challenge Cup will continue on Friday with Mixed Doubles and the first three-game block of the Team event.
