Alexandra Zormpa and Ioannis Maroussis (pictured left, l-r) won the first gold medal for Greece in the 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup Friday at Bowling Klub 300 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, when the duo averaged 208.08 to emerge as Mixed Doubles champion.

Maroussis led the team with 1316 and Zormpa added 1181 for 2497 total to beat out Maja Debenec and Anže Grabrijan from the host country Slovenia for the title by mere two pins.

The Slovenians, who took the lead with 495 and 479 in games four and five finished with 393 for 2495, while the Greek finished with their high game of 462 to claim the title. It was the second silver medal for Grabrijan, whose silver medal in Singles was the first medal in an international championship in the history of Slovenian Tenpin Bowling.

Sue Abela and her son Justin C. Scicluna of Malta topped their compatriots Tiziana Carannante and Rankin Camilleri, 2484 to 2444, to earn the bronze medal.

Grabrijan (left) rolled games of 210, 211, 222, 268, 288 and 216 for 1415 (235.83 average), the highest six-game block of the championships so far, to take a 152-pin lead in Men's All Events with 3940 total and an average of 218.89 for 18 games.

Heading into the last six games of the Team event, previous leader and Singles champion Scicluna of Malta sits in second place with 3788 and is followed by Maurizio Celli of Italy in third place with 3712.

Women's Singles champion Helga Di Benedetto (right) regained the lead in All Events with 3658 total and an average of 203.22. Trailing Di Benedetto by 66 pins to sit in second place was Abela with 3592.

Her fellow countrywoman Carannante is another 129 pins behind in third place with 3463.

The 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup 2013 will be held from April 9-14, 2013 at Bowling Klub 300, a 16-laner in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Each country is represented by a team of up to two female and two male competitors.

50 players, 26 men and 24 women, from 13 countries - Croatia, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and host Slovenia - compete in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Team, All Events and Masters.

The Mediterranean Challenge Cup will continue on Friday with the first three-game block of the Team event.
