Italy captured the coveted gold medal in the four-player Mixed Team event in the 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup Saturday at Bowling Klub 300 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Francesco Bellomonte, Fausta Regali, Helga Di Benedetto and Maurizio Celli joined forces to lead the team from 12 countries with 4924 total and an average of 205.17.

Celli led the team with 1313 and was followed by Bellomonte (1283), Regali (1200) and Di Benedetto (1128).

Turkey was a distant second with 4752 (198.00) to take the silver medal and Malta got bronze with 4721 (196.71).

Anže Grabrijan (center) averaged 215.09 and totaled 5183 pins over 24 games in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Team event to win the title in Men's All Events and the first-ever gold medal for Slovenia in an international championship.

Habib DoÄŸan (left) of Turkey posted the field-best 1377 series in the Team event to shoot into second place and to take the silver medal with 5050 (210.42). Maurizio Celli (right) of Italy earned the bronze medal with 5025 (209.38).

Sue Abela (center) of Malta, who has medaled in all 16 MCCs, took another gold medal in Women's All Events finishing with 4799 total and an average of 199.96 for 24 games. It was the fifth medal for Abela in as many events this year.

Helga Di Benedetto (left) of Italy was mere 13 pins behind to take the silver medal with 4786 (199.42). Bronze went to Abela's team mate Tiziana Carannante (right) with 4695 (195.63).

The 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup 2013 will be held from April 9-14, 2013 at Bowling Klub 300, a 16-laner in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Each country is represented by a team of up to two female and two male competitors.

50 players, 26 men and 24 women, from 13 countries - Croatia, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and host Slovenia - compete in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Team, All Events and Masters.

The top eight men and the top eight women in All Events advanced to the Masters finals, which will conclude the 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup on Saturday afternoon.
