Tolga ÅžiÅŸmanoÄŸullar (Turkey), Myria Kastori (Cyprus) emerge as Masters Champions

    2013MCCLogo.jpg Tolga ÅžiÅŸmanoÄŸullar and Myria Kastori won the first gold medal for Turkey and Cyprus in the 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup when the No. 5 seeds emerged as men's and women's Masters champion Saturday afternoon at Bowling Klub 300 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

    The top eight in All Events advanced to the Masters finals featuring single elimination, two-game matches decided by total pinfall. The top 4 men were eliminated in the first round. Şişmanoğullar then ousted No. 8 Miše Mrkonjić of Croatia, 375-341, while No. 6 Ioannis Maroussis of Greece flew past Singles champion and No. 7 seed, Justin C. Scicluna, 471-292.

    2013MCCMastersMen.jpgIn the title match, ÅžiÅŸmanoÄŸullar trailed Maroussis by 17 pins after the first game, 223-240, but rebounded with a 71-pin win in game two, 194-123, to claim the title, 417-363.

    Maroussis, who won the title in Mixed Doubles with Alexandra Zormpa, took the silver medal, while Mrkonjić and Scicluna shared bronze.

    On the women's side, No. 5 Myria Kastori of Cyprus and No. 6 Fausta Regali of Italy battled it out for the title after the underdogs stunned the top seeds in the semifinals.

    2013MCCMastersWomen.jpgRegali eliminated No. 1 All Events champion Sue Abela of Malta, 385-365, and Kastori ousted Singles champion Helga Di Benedetto of Italy, 405-387.

    Kastori carried the momentum into the title match and rolled games of 206 and 222 to wrap up the title with 428-349 victory. Regali took the silver medal and Abela and Di Benedetto got bronze.

    Abela, who has medaled in each of the previous 15 Mediterranean Challenge Cups, has medaled in all six disciplines this year to walk away with two gold and four bronze medals. Malta led the medal tally with three gold and four bronze medals and was followed by Italy, which got the most medals, with two gold, three silver and four bronze.

    Nine out of 13 countries participating in the 16th edition of the Mediterranean Challenge Cup medaled.

    2013MCCLogo.jpg The 16th Mediterranean Challenge Cup 2013 was held from April 9-14, 2013 at Bowling Klub 300, a 16-laner in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Each country was represented by a team of up to two female and two male competitors.

    50 players, 26 men and 24 women, from 13 countries - Croatia, Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and host Slovenia - competed in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Team, All Events and Masters.

    Dates and venue for the 17th Mediterranean Challenge Cup haven't been decided yet.
