Indiana bowlers escape bad weather to make successful USBC Women's Championships appearance

2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg For Fort Wayne, Ind. bowler Sandy Kaiser, bad weather on the other side of the country meant good fortune on the lanes at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus. Kaiser and doubles partner Coleen Fritsch, also of Fort Wayne, moved into fifth place in Division 2 Doubles competition.

It all began when companion LaMargarita teams got caught in stormy weather during a layover in Atlanta, which split the two teams up - literally. Scheduled on different flights, one team was grounded in Atlanta, while Kaiser's team was able to fly to Reno, just missing the storm. Ultimately, the stranded LaMargarita team members were forced to rent a car and drive all the way back to Fort Wayne, missing their tournament experience.

"We were lucky," notes Kaiser, who picked up her USBC commemorative plaque for 25 years of tournament participation. "We had the earlier flight and missed the storms, but unfortunately they came out later and hit all that bad weather. It was a mess."

After some lineup shuffling, Kaiser was paired with Fritsch, a 15-year friend she'd known through their Fort Wayne bowling league.

"I started off kind of slow and Coleen started off good," explains Kaiser, adding that she made a slight adjustment in her delivery. "I was pulling my arm across my body, so after I corrected that, things improved. I finally got into a rhythm and that's how it unfolded."

Fritsch rolled games of 198, 190 and 156 for a 544 series, while Kaiser contributed 165, 202 and 246 for 613. Kaiser also moved into fourth place of Division 2 All Events, with scores of 567, 613 and 565, for a 1,745 pinfall.

Fritsch and Kaiser made the girls back home proud. Kaiser says she intends on bowling the USBC Women's Championships next year in Charlotte, N.C., as well as the Open Championships in Reno, with her husband. Until then, her success this year will stick with her for awhile.

"It's by far the best I've ever bowled in the Women's Championships," Kaiser says. "I think bowling in the National Bowling Stadium gives you the inspiration to bowl better."
