Nebraska bowler gets new ball, new partner and scores big at USBC Women's Championships

National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. (March 16 - July 2, 2006)

2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg DeAnn Kubr had a new ball and a new doubles partner, and both proved a boon for her at the United States Bowling Congress 2006 Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

Kubr, 47, moved into second in Division 4 singles; fifth in doubles (along with partner Jane Buckendahl); and first in All-Events competition. Incredibly, she wasn't aware of any of those laurels until she received the news via cell phone as she drove to San Francisco with her Sweet Promises teammates.

"Holy cow," I can't believe it," was Kubr's reaction. "Jane, my teammate, is in the car ahead of us. She's going to be shocked when we make a stop and I tell her. Jane was so unhappy with her singles performance, she wanted to throw her ball into the river in Reno."

Kubr and Buckendahl, teaming together for the first time, rolled a 942 in Division 4 doubles (for teams averaging 260 and under) to finish fifth and beat out the three teams that had been tied for the slot at 941. Kubr bowled 522 and Buckendahl contributed 420. "We won by a pin? I can't believe we didn't check the scores before we left Reno," Kubr exclaimed.

In Division 4 singles, using her brand new, 15-pound ball, the Columbus, Neb. resident rolled games of 195, 198 and 170 for a 563 series that beat out Rose Postle's second place 554.

Kubr's least compelling performance was the 472 she bowled in team competition for the Sweet Promises, with games of 151, 148 and 173. Still, it was enough to give her an All-Events total in Division 4 of 1,557, which easily outdistanced former leader Linda Azuma who had posted 1,491.

Like her partner, the 40-year-old Jane Buckendahl is a "Husker" who lives in neighboring Stanton, Neb., about 90 miles north of Lincoln. Buckendahl and Kubr also share the same average - 122.

Suffice it to say, the Sweet Promises plan celebrating the weekend in San Francisco.
