2013TeamUSASummerTrialsAnthonyPepe.jpgAnthony Pepe of East Elmhurst, N.Y., and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, took the lead after the first round Friday at the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Summer Team USA Trials.

Pepe (pictured left) led the men's field with a three-game total of 742, while Dorin-Ballard topped the women with 740 on the short pattern (Stockholm) at the International Training and Research Center.

The top two men and top two women after 15 games will earn automatic spots on Team USA for 2014. The field will bowl six games on the medium pattern (Seoul) on Saturday and six games on the long pattern (London) on Sunday. Bowl fans can follow the action live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.

Pepe had games of 247, 258 and 237 to kick off the tournament and leads the men's field by 10 pins over Erik Vermilyea of Mansfield, Texas. Team USA member John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y., is third with 723.

"I'm off to a good start, but this type of event you just have to fill frames and take it one shot at a time."

Dorin-Ballard leads the women's division by a wide margin after tossing games of 235, 258 and 247. Emily Eckhoff of Denver is second with 658, and Ashley Rucker of Bartlesville, Okla., is third with 652.

"I tried to get as much as I could on the short pattern today," said Dorin-Ballard, a USBC Hall of Famer. "I'm probably the oldest bowler in the field by 20 years, so I'm just trying to keep up with all of them. And there are a lot of really talented bowlers in this field."

The Summer Team USA Trials features 31 men and 28 women competing for spots on Team USA. The remainder of the spots will be awarded through selections and the USBC Team USA Trials in January.
