Puerto Rico wins two gold medals in Singles to start 2013 PABCON Youth Championships

    2013PYCU20GirlsSinglesKristieLopez.jpg2013PYCU20BoysSinglesMattFarber.jpgThe 2013 Pan American Bowling Confederation Youth Championships kicked of its seven-day run Sunday at Bowling Center Caribe in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

    Estefania Cobo and Kristie Lopez (pictured left) from the host country Puerto Rico started the championships for youth bowlers under the age of 16 and under the age of 20 with victory in the girls divisions.

    Carlos Granados of Venezuela dominated the U16 boys, while Junior Team USA's Matt Farber (right) won the U20 boys singles gold medal.

    2013PYCU16GirlsSingles.jpgEstefania Cobo finished the U16 girls five-game series with 214 and 215 for 975 total and an average of 195 to capture the first gold medal of the Championships for Puerto Rico.

    Thanks to the strong finish, Cobo beat out Maria Restrepo for the gold medal by 17 pins. The Colombian took the silver medal with 958. The bronze medal went to Cobo's team mate Paulina Torres with 944.

    2013PYCU16BoysSingles.jpgCarlos Granados started the U16 boys competition with games of 251 and 278 and never looked back The Venezuelan finished with 1136, an average of 227.20 for five games, to cruise to the gold medal.

    Granados outaveraged his nearest competitor by more than twenty pins. Sebastian Salazar of Colombia checked in with 1030 to earn the silver medal. Puerto Rico's Antonio Izquierdo closed out with a huge 265 game to secure the bronze medal with 1005.

    2013PYCU20GirlsSingles.jpgIn the U20 girls singles, Kristie Lopez got off to a great start with games of 246 and 232 and maintained a four-pin lead after six games to win the second gold medal for Puerto Rico with 1262 pinfall and an average of 210.10.

    Colombia's Juliana Franco took the third silver medal for Colombia with 1258 with Mexico's Sara Pelayo another seven pins behind in third place to receive the bronze medal with 1251.

    2013PYCU20BoysSingles.jpgMatt Farber, a first-time member of Junior Team USA, fired a six-game total of 1391, an average of 231.80, to win the gold medal in the U20 boys division.

    Four bowlers battled it out for silver and bronze. Mexico's Andre Fors and Peru's Kenny Kishimoto tied for the silver medal at 1356. Farber's team mates Kamron Doyle and Wesley Low narrowly missed out on winning medals by one and two pins finishing fourth and fifth with 1355 and 1354.

    The PABCON Youth Championships continue with the doubles event.

    2013PYCLogo_small.jpg The 2013 PABCON Youth Championships for youth bowlers under the age of 16 and under the age of 20 will be held at 24-lane Bowling Center Caribe in Ponce, Puerto Rico from July 6-13, 2013. The championships drew 125 players, 30 in the Under 16 division (13 girls and 17 boys) and 95 in the Under 20 division (38/57) from 17 countries.

    Each PABCON member federation was allowed to send up to four boys and four girls in the U20 division and up to two boys and two girls in the U16 division. To be eligible players must not have reached 20 and 16 years of age on Jan. 1st, 2013, respectively.

    The Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) currently consist of 28 member federations: Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Virgin Islands.
