U.S. sweeps Team titles; Puerto Rico wins U16 Mixed Foursome at PABCON Youth

    Puerto Rico's Estefania Cobo (U16 girls), Jorge A. Rodriguez (U16 boys) and Kristie Lopez (U20 girls) captured another three gold medals in All Events. USA's Kamron Doyle won the title in U20 boys All Events.

    2013PYCU20GirlsTeamUSA2.jpgThe top eight girls and boys in the Under 16 division and the top 16 girls and boys in the Under 20 division advanced to Masters match play. All eight Junior Team USA bowlers qualified for the U20 Masters (Junior Team USA did not compete in the U16 division), but had to withdraw due to a scheduling conflict.

    Starting the second day of the Team event on the 44-foot London pattern in third place, the U.S. girls (L-R Lokker, Goodman, Wells and Renslow) needed a big final game to move from third to first place. Trailing leader Puerto Rico by 16 pins entering the last game, Mary Wells (249), Sarah Lokker (246), Robyn Renslow (213) and Natalie Goodman (211) rolled a 919 game, the highest game of the girls' team event, to take the title.

    2013PYCU20GirlsSinglesKristieLopez.jpgThe United States finished the competition with a 4763 six-game total and an average of 198.46. Puerto Rico took the silver medal with 4677 (194.88) while Colombia beat out Mexico for the bronze medal by seven pins, 4623 to 4616.

    Puerto Rico's Kristie Lopez (left) won the U20 girls All Events gold with 5032 total and an average of 209.67 for 24 games in Singles, Doubles, Trio and Team event. Lokker earned the silver medal with 4974 and Renslow took bronze with 4919.

    2013PYCU20BoysTeamUSA.jpgThe U.S. boys (L-R Young, Farber, Low and Doyle) had a 13-pin lead over Puerto Rico to start the day and never relinquished the lead. Kamron Doyle, Matthew Farber, Wesley Low & Gregory Young opened with an 888 game, then cranked out games of 983 and 939 to outdistance the field with a 5447 total and an average of 226.96 to win the gold medal.

    Trailing the Americans by 293 pins to finish in second place was Puerto Rico with 5154 while Costa Rica won the bronze medal with 4927.

    2013PYCU20BoysAEKameronDoyle.jpgDoyle (left), who led the team on Thursday with a 726 series that included a 279 game, won the gold medal in All Events with a 5469 pinfall total and an average of 227.88. Low won silver with 5374 and was followed by Andre Fors of Mexico, who took the bronze medal with 5319.

    All eight Junior Team USA players are scheduled to take part in the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships in the Detroit area and, with official practice sessions for the event scheduled for Saturday, they will not compete in Masters.

    2013PYCU16MixedFoursomePodium.jpgIn the U16 Mixed Foursome (pictured right is the podium), Venezuela averaged over 200 Thursday to overtake first-block leader Puerto Rico en route to claim the gold medal. Gabriela Mudo, Lisvier Cardenas, Massimiliano Fridegotto & Carlos Granados rolled games of 817, 787 and 800 to win the title with 4642 pinfall total and an average of 193.42.

    Puerto Rico finished with 4443 to win the silver medal with Colombia in third place at 4173.

    2013PYCU16GirlsAEEstefaniaCobo.jpgEstefania Cobo (left) of Puerto Rico won her third gold medal after Singles and Mixed Doubles in the U16 girls All Events finishing with 3802 or an average of 181.05 for 21 games. Colombia's Maria Restrepo and Isabella Correa took silver and bronze with 3797 and 3745, respectively.

Rodriguez (right) secured his second title after winning the Doubles with 4189 total and an average of 199.48. Carlos Granados was just one pin behind to take silver with 4188, one pin ahead of team mate Massimiliano Fridegotto, who got bronze with 4187.

    The PABCON Youth Championships concludes Friday with Masters match play. Based on the All Events totals, the top eight players in the U16 divisions and the top 16 player in the U20 divisions will advance to single-elimination, bracket competition.

    All matches will consist of best-of-three games until a champion is determined. The loser of the championship match receives the silver medal and the losers of the semifinals share the bronze medal.

    2013PYCLogo_small.jpg The 2013 PABCON Youth Championships for youth bowlers under the age of 16 and under the age of 20 will be held at 24-lane Bowling Center Caribe in Ponce, Puerto Rico from July 6-13, 2013. The championships drew 125 players, 30 in the Under 16 division (13 girls and 17 boys) and 95 in the Under 20 division (38/57) from 17 countries.

    Each PABCON member federation was allowed to send up to four boys and four girls in the U20 division and up to two boys and two girls in the U16 division. To be eligible players must not have reached 20 and 16 years of age on Jan. 1st, 2013, respectively.

    The Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) currently consist of 28 member federations: Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Virgin Islands.
