Women's Championships ends 109-day run at National Bowling Stadium

2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg A record team series highlighted title performances at the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus as the event ended its 109-day run at the National Bowling Stadium Monday.

Together Once Again of North Richland Hills, Texas
, set the all-time record team series on June 15 to win the Classic Division with 3,350. Classic Division teams have a team average of 946 or higher.

2006USBCWomenTogetherOnceAgain.jpg Tammy Boomershine led Together Once Again with a 707 series, followed by Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (686), Andrea Fleming (676), Lynda Barnes (642) and Cathy Dorin-Lizzi (639). The team series eclipsed the previous record of 3,327 set by High Roller-Cherry Hills, N.J. of Henderson, Nev., bowled in 2002.

Together Once Again started with a team game of 1,185 and closed with games of 998 and 1,167. Even after the strong start, Dorin-Ballard, a spokesperson for USBC High School, said the focus was just on winning, not setting records.

I don't think any of us were looking at a record; we just wanted to take the lead if we could," Dorin-Ballard said. "Our score just happened to be a record."

The team event record was just one of many leader board changes in the Classic Division in the days leading up to the USBC Queens in June.

2006USBCWomenKarenStroud_small.jpg Karen Stroud of Victoria, Texas, was a double winner, taking Classic Singles with 771 and Classic All-Events with 2,159.

Stroud, who teamed with Brenda Norman to win the Classic Doubles title last year, had games of 278, 235 and 258 in her singles effort. She added 744 in doubles and 644 in team.

2006USBCWomenLeanneBarretteLaurenTakahashi_small.jpg Defending Classic All-events and Singles champion Leanne Barrette of Elk Grove, Calif., took the top spot in Classic Doubles along with her partner Lauren Takahashi of Woodland Hills, Calif. The pair combined for a 1,466 total.

Barrette had games of 248, 257 and 235 for a 740 series while Takahashi contributed 726 on games of 233, 245 and 248.

Barrette won last year's Classic Singles and All-Events titles with record 774 and 2,231 performances respectively.

In all, 20 Women's Championships titles were determined in five average divisions. The tournament attracted 10,976 teams which competed for a prize fund estimated to be $2.6 million, second only to the 2003 event that had a $2.7 million prize fund.

A testament to the tradition of the tournament and what it means to participants was the honoring of Mini Tvaska of St. Petersburg, Fla., who competed in her 60th Women's Championships on April 30, the most of any active bowler. Three others, Dorothy Sternberg of Indianapolis; Mildred Anderson, Rochester Hills, Mich.; and Mary Louise Young of Houston, were honored for their 50th Women's Championships appearance.

Alease Jones of Norfolk, Va., threw the last ball of the 2006 Women's Championships, finishing with a 139 game, which gave her a singles series of 388. The last of the tournament's approximately 55,000 bowlers, Jones was less than happy with her performance, but said, "I always have a good time when I come to Reno to bowl, and that's the important thing."

The Women's Championships makes its first visit to Charlotte, N.C., in 2007.
