South Korea's Choi Ae Rim (pictured left) and Chong Jun Foo (right) of Malaysia started the 17th Asian Youth Championships with victory in the girls and boys Singles event Tuesday at SCAA Bowling Center in Hong Kong, China.

Ae Rim rolled a 1246 series on the 36-feet long pattern, an average of 207.67, in the first of two squads in the girls division and remained atop the 48-player leaderboard to capture the gold medal. The Korean had games of 189, 181, 233, 204, 248 and 191.

Second place belonged to Shinobu Saito (left) of Japan, who fell 26 pins short behind a 174 final game to take the silver medal with 1220 (203.33). Cheya Chantika (right) of Indonesia finished her set with a big 223 game to lead Squad B and to earn the bronze medal with 1211 (201.83).

Faten Najihah of Malaysia and North Korea's Im Ji Hyang, who also cracked the 1200-bar, had to settle for fourth and fifth place with 1208 and 1202, respectively.

Bowling in squad 2, Jun Foo knew he had to average over 225 to win the gold medal in the 81-player boys division. He followed solid games of 194 and 207 with 256, 237 and 259 and closed with 208 for 1361 (226.83 average), to beat out squad 1 leader Billy Muhammad Islam (left) for the top spot by seven pins.

The Indonesian took the silver medal with 1354 (225.67), while Lee Ik Kyu (right) of South Korea finished with 258 to maintain a 17-pin lead over David Tsang of Hong Kong en route to earn the bronze medal with 1322 (220.33). Tsang, who closed out with 267, had to settle for fourth place with 1305 (217.50).

Action shifts to the doubles competition on medium oil on Wednesday.

The 17th Asian Youth Championships in Hong Kong drew record 129 players, 81 boys and 48 girls, from 21 countries of the Asian Bowling Federation, who will compete Sept. 10-14 at 40-lane South China Athletic Association Bowling Center inside the SCAA sports complex at Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, China.

Up to four boys and four girls per country who must not be born before January 1, 1993, will bowl in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in five disciplines: Singles (contested on long oil), Doubles (medium oil), four-player Teams (first block medium, second block long oil), All Events and Masters (first block long, second block medium oil).

Competition will conclude on Saturday with boys and girls Masters stepladder finals, which will be staged on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the 12-lane training facility inside the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
