Koreans Kim Jin Sun, Lee Kyu Hwan earn No. 1 seed for Asian Youth Masters finals

The girls and boys from South Korea dominated the Masters round robin match play at the 17th Asian Youth Championships and will have two out of three players in the stepladder finals, which will be staged on Saturday at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.

In the girls semifinal match, All-Events champion Joey Yeo Ruoqi of Singapore takes on Singles champion Choi Ae Rim. Singles bronze medalist Lee Ik Kyu meets team champion Kenta Yoshida of Japan in the boys' semifinal match.

Jin Sun, who was fourth after the first eight games on long oil, averaged 222.50 in the second block on medium oil to shoot into the lead and to earn the No. 1 seed for the girls finals with 3498 total including 105 bonus pins (10 per win, five for a tie) and an overall average of 212.06.
Ruoqi (left), who shared the lead with Ji Eun Sol of Korea after the first block (both 1732 including 50 bonus), finished in second place with 3442 including an 11-5 match play record. Ae Rim (right) was twenty pins behind with 3423 (11-5).
Kyu Hwan also was in fourth place on long oil and won all but the position round match against Ik Kyu, averaging 220.50 on medium oil to earn the No. 1 seed with 3592 total including 110 bonus pins and an average of 217.63 for 16 games.

The top 16 girls and boys in All-Events (combined results in Singles, Doubles and Team) qualified Masters round robin match play on Friday. The first block (games 1-8) was played on long oil and the second block (games 9-15 plus position round match) on medium oil.
The top three advanced to the stepladder finals, which will conclude the championships on Saturday. The girls Masters finals will start at 1.30 p.m. Hong Kong Time and the boys finals are slated for 3 p.m.
The 17th Asian Youth Championships in Hong Kong drew record 129 players, 81 boys and 48 girls, from 21 countries of the Asian Bowling Federation, who compete Sept. 10-14 at 40-lane South China Athletic Association Bowling Center inside the SCAA sports complex at Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, China.
Up to four boys and four girls per country who must not be born before January 1, 1993, bowl in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in five disciplines: Singles (contested on long oil), Doubles (medium oil), four-player Teams (first block medium, second block long oil), All Events and Masters (first block long, second block medium oil).
Competition concludes Saturday with boys and girls Masters stepladder finals, which will be staged at the 12-lane training facility inside the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
