Choi Ae Rim, Lee Kyu Hwan end 17th Asian Youth Championships with victory in Masters

In all-Korean championship matches, Choi Ae Rim (pictured left) and Lee Kyu Hwan (right) captured the gold medals in the Girls and Boys Masters stepladder finals, which concluded the 17th Asian Youth Championships Saturday in Hong Kong, China.
Ae Rim earned her third gold medal of the championships after Singles and Team with a 516-466 victory over her top-seeded team mate Kim Jin Sun (below left). In the opening match of the girls finals, Ae Rim, seeded third, eliminated All-Events champion, Joey Yeo Ruoqi, 221-190.
In the men's stepladder final, Kyu Hwan, the No. 1 seed, defeated his team mate Lee Ik Kyu (right), 426-385, to earn the gold medal. Ik Kyu defeated third-seeded team champion Kenta Yoshida of Japan, 221-191, to set up a title match against Kyu Hwan.
Jin Sun and Ik Kyu received the silver medals, while Yeo and Yoshida got bronze.
With the gold and silver medal sweep in Masters, Korea led the overall medal tally of the 17th Asian Youth Championships with four gold, five silver and one bronze medal. Indonesia and Malaysia returned home with two gold medals, while Singapore and Japan got one.
Choi Ae Rim of Korea (3 gold medals) and Billy Muhammad Islamof Indonesia (2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) were the most valuable players in the girls and boys division, respectively.
The 17th Asian Youth Championships in Hong Kong drew record 129 players, 81 boys and 48 girls, from 21 countries of the Asian Bowling Federation, who compete Sept. 10-14 at 40-lane South China Athletic Association Bowling Center inside the SCAA sports complex at Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, China.
Up to four boys and four girls per country who must not be born before January 1, 1993, bowled in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in five disciplines: Singles (contested on long oil), Doubles (medium oil), four-player Teams (first block medium, second block long oil), All Events and Masters (first block long, second block medium oil).
Competition concluded Saturday with the boys and girls Masters stepladder finals, which were staged at the 12-lane training facility inside the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
