Korea's Son Yun Hee, Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong win East Asian Games Masters titles

Son shoots two big games to cruise to her sixth gold medal; Korean women sweep all gold medals; Wu beats Korea's Choi Bok Eum in Men's Masters, denies the Korean men and the entire team a clean sweep of all gold medals

Son Yun Hee of Korea and Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong (pictured left, r-l) took different routes to win the gold medals in the women's and men's Masters, which concluded the 6th East Asian Games tenpin bowling competition at Tianjin Tuanbo Bowling Center in Tianjin, China.

Son, who won three gold medals at the World Championships in Las Vegas six weeks ago, played in her own league averaging 231.69 to earn the No. 1 seed for all-Korean women's stepladder final.

In the opening match, No. 3 seed Lee Na Young (left) topped No. 2 Jung Da Wun (right), 237-207, for the right to bowl Son for the title over two games total pins. Son flew past her team mate with games of 279 and 267, an average of 273, to win her sixth gold medal in as many events in the Games.

Lee took the silver medal and Jung got bronze.

The Korean women won seven gold medals (Son and Kim Moon Jeong tied for gold in Singles), four silver and three bronze, just one bronze medal short (in Doubles) of the maximum medals a country can earn in Singles, Doubles Trios, Team of Five, All-Events and Masters.

Chinese Taipei (one silver and two bronze medals) and China (one bronze medal) shared the remaining four medals.

Seeded third in the men's stepladder finals, Wu Siu Hong defeated two Korean bowlers en route to win the title and to deny the Korean men and the entire Korean team a clean sweep of the gold medals.

In the opening match, Wu eliminated No. 2 Shin Seung Hyeon (left), 233-216, to meet four-time EAG gold medalist Choi Bok Eum (right) in the title match. Choi, who averaged 244.25 in the second block of match play and 226.50 overall to earn the No. 1 seed, took a comfortable 35-pin lead after the first game, 205-170.

Needing a mark in the 10th frame of the second game, Choi suffered a big split which opened the door for Wu, who won the game by 43 pins, 233-190, and the match, 403-395.

The Korean men walked away with five gold, four silver and four bronze medals which gave the Korean team a landslide victory of twelve gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals. The only other countries, who medaled in the men's division were Hong Kong (one gold, one silver) and Japan (one silver, two bronze).

84 players - 38 women and 46 men - from eight East Asian countries, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei and host country China, competed in the 6th East Asian Games Bowling Championships from Oct. 5-16 at Tianjin Tuanbo Bowling Center in Tianjin, China.

Men and women bowled in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team of Five, All-Events and Masters (top 16 men and women in All-Events).
