Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., with a strike in the 10th frame of his final game Sunday, captured the top berth for the Professional Bowlers Association's Viper Championship presented by PBA Bowling Challenge at South Point Bowling Center.

The Viper Championship is the second of five PBA Tour events that compose the PBA World Series of Bowling V.

Ciminelli, who won his only PBA Tour title in the 2011 Earl Anthony Memorial, battled for the lead all day, but didn't make the move into first place until the final frame of his 14th game. His 268 final game gave him a total of 3,244 pins (231.71 average) and the lead by 18 pins over Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas (3,226).

England's Stuart Williams was further 19 pins behind in third place with 3,207 and Australia's Jason Belmonte earned the fourth berth in the Nov. 2 Viper finals with a 3,178 total.

D.J. Archer (right) of Friendswood, Texas, rolled the only 300 of the Viper event in the final game but fell 32 pins short to finish in fifth place with 3,146.

"Considering how demanding the lane conditions were, I threw a lot of strikes," Ciminelli said. "The lanes were just downright tough, especially after the high scores we had Saturday (in the Cheetah Championship).

"The first three games today, I had the pocket, but I couldn't knock pins over. I figured the day was going to be short, just like it was Saturday. But I changed balls and the pins started falling. It didn't matter if I hit the pocket light, heavy, whatever. As long as I kept my feet slow and got the ball out on the lane, everything fell into place."

The top 24 of 235 players after the first round advanced to the semifinal round which began Sunday at 7:30 p.m. PT. England's Dom Barrett (left) averaged 243 to take the first round lead with a seven-game total of 1,701 pins.

"It was a really good round," Barrett said. "We had a late night Saturday, and didn't get as much sleep as you'd like, but I had a good breakfast and got back to work. I had a good picture of how the lanes were playing, and I put four good games together. I was able to take advantage of a really good ball reaction, and that was the key to the round."

Barrett, who won his only PBA Tour title in the 2011 Scorpion Championship during PBA World Series of Bowling III at South Point, slipped out of the top 4 in the semifinal round to finish in to 13th place with 3,017. He leads the PBA World Championship qualifying after two of four events with 3,382 total and an average of 241.57 for 14 games.

The international contingent was well represented in the semifinal round. Joonas Jehkinen (left), Finland, finished in sixth place with 3,112 and was followed by three-time Japan PBA Player of the Year Shota Kawazoe (right) in seventh with 3,107.

England's Paul Moor (3,053) was 10th with Patrick Girard of Canada in 14th place with 2,998. Finns Osku Palermaa and Mika Koivuniemi landed in 15th and 18th place with 2,995 and 2,971, respectively.
