12th Asian Seniors Tenpin Bowling Championship gets underway with Singles competition



    Japan, Philippines, Korea and Australia win the titles in women's and men's 50 & over and 60 & over divisions

    2013AsSrCLogo.jpg The 12th Asian Seniors Tenpin Bowling Championship got underway Saturday with the Singles competition at AMF Rooty Hill RSL Bowling Center in Sydney, Australia.

    Men and women from Guam, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines and the host country Australia competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in two age categories - Seniors (50 & over) and Grand Seniors (60 & over).

    Championship play began at 8.30 a.m. Australian Eastern Daylight Time this morning with the Grand Seniors Women's Singles in which Japan's Junko Kuji's gold medal performance of 1383 included the event high game of 276 and an impressive 230.50 average over six games. ss Sarah Knowland of Australia took silver on 1355, with Masako Takamoto, Japan, third on 1260. Recent inductee to Tenpin Bowling Australia's Hall of Fame, Barbara Richmond missed Bronze by just 15 pins to finish fourth with 1245.

    The second event saw an exciting 279 in game 2 by Filipino Danilo Tuazon, who went on to claim gold in the Grand Seniors Men's Singles with a total pinfall of 1376, a mere three pins ahead of Hidehiro Madore from Japan (1373). Veteran TBA Hall of Famer, John Sullivan, clinched Bronze on 1350, 16 pins clear of Korea's Dong Kuk You (1334).

    2013AsSrCMickTalevski.jpg In a thrilling climax to the Senior Men's Singles this afternoon, Australia's Mick Talevski (pictured right) surged to victory with a perfect final game to score 1470, overtaking team-mate Steven Smith (1462) in another tight finish.

    Korea's Lee Soo Ho won bronze on 1375. Lee overcame a slow start with a 299 in game 3 but strong finishes by the Aussie pair secured top podium honors for Talevski and Smith.

    Korea dominated placings in the Senior Women's Singles, with Lee Hwa Ja clinching gold on 1397, ahead of team-mate Kim Gwi Nam on 1357. Australia's Julie Harrison pipped Japan's Honami Yanagawa to the Bronze by just two pins, 1303 to 1301.

    Competition is scheduled to recommence at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday morning with the Doubles events.
