Australian & Japanese men, Korean & Japanese women triumph in Teams events

    Aussies Mick Talevski and Robert Zikman claim gold in men's Senior and Grand Senior All-Events; Lee Hwa Ja (KOR) and Junko Kuji (JPN) win the titles in women's Senior and Grand Senior All-Events

    Overnight leaders in the Senior Women's division, Korea's Lee Hwa Ja, Kim Gwi Nam, Kim Mi Ja and Kim Myo Seon, seized the gold medal in the 12th Asian Seniors Tenpin Bowling Championship in Sydney, Australia, Wednesday morning posting lines of 864, 800 and 813 to finish on 4918.

    Finishing strongly with an 893 game, Japan's Eiko Toriyabe, Honami Yanagawa, Chieko Hirata and Yuko Miyakura won the silver medal on 4824 while Australia's Jill Morris, Robyn Flynn, Heather Robertson and Julie Harrison took bronze with 4698.

    High Game and High Average honors went to Australia's Heather Robertson who shot 258 in game 2 yesterday and an outstanding 227.7 average in the six-game event.

    Top two placings in the Senior Women's All Events went to Korea, with Lee Hwa Ja winning gold with an overall average of 217.4, Kim Gwi Nam earning silver with 214.3, and Australia's Heather Robertson taking bronze with 212.9.

    The field was cut to the top 16 senior women for the start of tomorrow's Masters event, with New Zealand's Lynnaire Churchill making the cut with a 3189 total pinfall and 177.2 overall average.

    The Grand Seniors Women's Teams event came to a thrilling climax as Korea's Park Myung Suk, Hyun Jung Sook, Moon Hyun Ja and Choi Soon Nam accelerated past Japan's Nobuko Miyake, Tomoko Yoshikawa, Kazumi Koike and Kiyoko Yoshida in the final game to grab silver by a single pin.

    Japan's Masako Takamoto, Harumi Chatani, Misako Karatsu and Junko Kuji maintained their early grip on the event, streaking to a 4829 tally to claim gold, 249 clear of Korea and 250 ahead of their hapless team-mates, who were relegated to bronze.

    With a 279 in game 2 and High Average honors for the Grand Seniors Teams event, Japan's Junko Kuji topped the leaderboard in the All-Events, with team-mates Masako Tokamoto and Kazumi Koike in second and third place.

    Australia's Ursula Ramsay was the cut for the Grand Seniors Masters in 16th place with a 3377 total with handicap.

    Aussies Mick Talevski, Mario Cordedda, Bob Whybrow and Paul Terry, who led the Seniors Men Team event after the first block with 2725 posted the highest second block of 2657 to easily win the gold medal in men's Senior Teams with 5382 total and an average of 224.25.

    2013AsSrCSeniorMenAllEvents.jpgTheir teammates Steve Lenton, Steven Smith, Martin Muxworthy and Gordon Robinson were 310 pins behind to take the silver medal with 5072.

    Bronze went to tin Muxworthy and Gordon Robinson are currently in second place on 2562. Kim Hong Seung, Jang Seon Myeon, Lee Soo Ho and Ho Hui Jae from Korea, who posted the second highest 2574 series today and 5030 overall.

    Mick Talevski (center), Australia, took another gold medal in All-Events averaging 229.1 over 18 games (4124; individual results in Singles, Doubles and Teams). Lee Soo Ho (left) of Korea took the silver medal with 4022 and Steven Smith (right), Australia, got bronze on 3977.

    Ho Hui Jae of Korea hit the cutoff number for 16th place with 3678 or an average of 204.3.

    In the men's Grand Seniors' division, Japan's Takayuki Kikugawa, Chikataka Iwai, Kokichi Itagaki and Yusuke Harimoto leaped from sixth to first place in the second block to capture the gold medal with 5089 including handicap.

    Australians Nick Koumandakis, Rob Zikman, Greg Williams and Gary Bernardin, who led at the half-way point, were mere 16 pins behind to settle for silver with 5073.

    2013AsSrCGSMenAllEvents.jpgJapan's Hidehiro Madore, Isamu Takada, Yoshinori Tanaka and Shuitsu Korin jumped from ninth to third place to grab the bronze medal with 4934.

    Robert Zikman (center) averaged 222.5 scratch and added five pins handicap each game to claim the gold medal in the men's Grand Senior All-Events with 4095 total. Hidehiro Madore (left) of Japan and John Sullivan (right) received silver and bronze with 3954 and 3947, respectively.

    Isamu Takada of Japan took the 16th and last place to advance to the Masters competition with 3743.

    2013AsSrCLogo_small.jpg The 12th Asian Seniors Championship program now moves into the final stages on Wednesday and Thursday, with top 16 All-Events players in both men's and women's divisions returning tomorrow for the first block of round robin match play starting from scratch and with a bonus of 10 pins for each match won and 5 pins for a tie.
