Baker takes long road through losers bracket to win 2006 USBC Senior Masters

Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Tom Baker reinforced his position as bowling’s dominant senior professional bowler by winning the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters Friday at the National Bowling Stadium.
The 51-year-old Baker from King, N.C., defeated winners bracket finalist Bob Kelly of Dayton, Ohio, 686-612, and 645-575, in the three-game double-elimination conclusion to win his first Senior Masters title and the $18,000 first prize. It was his second senior tour major of the year having won the PBA Senior U.S. Open in June.
To get to the championship match, Baker won nine consecutive losers bracket matches. He won seven matches on Thursday after losing his second match Wednesday evening and then won two more Friday morning. His 12 overall match wins and 13 total matches are Senior Masters records.
“This has been an incredible tournament for me,” Baker said. “It was a real long day yesterday so I was a little worried about how I might feel for this morning’s matches. After taking a few shots this morning it didn’t take long to get comfortable.”
Friday morning Baker defeated three-time Team USA member Ron Mohr of Eagle River Alaska, 693-637, and Tim Ruelle of Racine, Wis., 719-641, before meeting Kelly for the championship.
“I used the same thought process today as I did for the whole tournament,” Baker said. “Read the lanes and make the right moves. I was really in synch with making the right adjustments and changes in equipment all week.
“I’ve really been working on the mental part of the game,” he added. “I’m to the point where I’m really comfortable with the adjustments I have to make.”
Baker’s Senior Masters win gives him four titles for the year which ties the record for most senior tour titles in a season with 2003 Senior Masters champion Dale Eagle and Pete Couture. Earlier this season Baker won a PBA senior tour record three consecutive titles which included his second career Senior U.S. Open victory.
Kelly, 54, who retired from General Motors to compete full time on the senior tour, looked at his second-place finish as a learning experience.
“I admit I have a lot to learn and this was a great experience for me,” Kelly said. “Today I learned that I needed to control my ball speed better. I was a little too pumped up and as a result started throwing it a little too hard.”
“I have no complaints,” he added. “This has been something I’ve aspired to do and I’m thrilled to be bowling with guys like Tom out here on the tour.” Kelly earned $9,000 for second.
Participating Senior Masters sponsors are Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC, and Eldorado Hotel and Casino, the Senior Masters headquarter hotel.

Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Tom Baker mowed down his opponents in the losers bracket of the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters during Thursday's double-elimination match play competition at the National Bowling Stadium.
Baker won all seven of his three-game matches averaging 244.2 and did not have a series below 703. He also rolled the first 300 game of the tournament in a match against Fred Mattson of Tacoma, Wash.
"I think this has to be one of the best, if not the best day I've ever had in bowling," he said. "But it was also one of the longest."
Baker, who makes his home in King, N.C., credits his commitment to becoming a more versatile player for his recent success on the PBA Senior Tour this year. He became the first bowler to win three consecutive senior tour titles which included his second Senior U.S. Open title.
"Years ago I was a pretty one-dimensional player," said the 51-year-old Baker. "I've had a lot of help from people like Brad Angelo, Mo Pinel and Rick Benoit who have given me more knowledge from an equipment and mechanics standpoint. You just can't be a one-style player anymore * you have to be versatile."
Baker admitted he put that knowledge to the test in today's match play.
"There was a big difference in the pairs that I bowled on today," Baker said. "I had to use a variety of lines and a few different balls."
In addition to Baker, the other three players still in contention for the Senior Masters title are Bob Kelly of Dayton, Ohio and Tim Ruelle of Racine, Wis., from the winners bracket, and three-time Team USA member Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, also still alive in the losers bracket.
The 54-year-old Kelly recently retired from General Motors to take on the challenge of competing on the senior tour. "I basically retired to bowl full-time," Kelly said. "So far it's been a heck of a learning experience but I'm just thrilled to death to be able to do this." Kelly is married to USBC Hall of Famer and former Team USA member Linda Kelly.
Match play continues Friday morning with the championship match set for noon PT. The winner will take home an $18,000 first prize.

Petraglia, who finished second in the 1997 Senior Masters, defeated Ernie Franklin of Winchester, N.H., 682-601, and Bob Hanson of Spokane, Wash., 634-614, in Wednesday evening's matches at the National Bowling Stadium.
"Two-0 and go to bed - that feels pretty good right now," Petraglia said. "I've been picking the right equipment and making the right adjustments so things are going well so far." Eagle, a 10-time senior tour titlist, defeated Terry Leong of Henderson, Nev., 643-554, and 2005 and 2006 PBA Senior U.S. Open champion Tom Baker, 643-554.
Like Petraglia, Eagle echoed the importance of making the right adjustments. I've made a lot of adjustments mainly in my delivery but they have been very small adjustments," Eagle said. "You've got to be versatile and have the little tricks to keep up with the changing conditions."
Top qualifier Roger Kossert was eliminated after losing his first two matches. Among those moving into the losers bracket were defending champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. and two-time Senior Masters champions Gary Dickinson and Pete Couture.
After Wednesday's match play the field has been cut to 48 players. Competition continues with double-elimination match play Thursday and Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT (noon PDT) on Friday.

Jeff Suma and Steve Calyore tied for the 63rd and final qualifying spot requiring a one-game rolloff which was won by Calyore, 184-174.
The high game of the tournament thus far was a 296 shot by Carl Chavez of Albuquerque in second-round qualifying.

In the past three years United States Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson has had his share of ailments and health problems. He's had serious back and shoulder injuries and in November of 2004 suffered a heart attack.
After a productive PBA Senior Tour season so far this year, which includes a win at last week's stop in Brentwood, Calif., he feels he's back in fighting shape*or at least pretty close to it.
Dickinson moved into the lead after USBC Senior Masters second-round qualifying Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium with a 2,225 10-game pinfall. "I'm feeling the best I have in three years," said the 1997 and 2004 Senior Masters champion. "I'm not as strong as I'd like to be but I'm pretty close.
"After I had the heart attack the doctor put me on a strict exercise routine which includes a lot of walking and that has really helped. Things have improved to the extent that I feel like I'm in pretty good shape now."
In Tuesday's qualifying Dickinson had a five-game pinfall of 1,114 after rolling 1,111 in Monday's block. On Monday he played an inside shot but in his second block he was able to play his trademark "gutter" shot.
It was that gutter shot that helped launch a hall of fame career that includes eight PBA National Tour and 12 Senior Tour titles.
"I've had success playing inside and outside but I'm most comfortable playing the gutter," said the 63-year-old right-hander from Edmond, Okla. "After the first game today I was getting a great reaction from the gutter on the backend and never had to move."
If there has been a disappointment for Dickinson this season it has been his finish in the PBA Senior U.S. Open in June where he failed to make match play. "I was really disappointed with how I bowled there, so I want to make up for it here," he added.
The Senior Masters continues with the final five-game qualifying block for all competitors on Wednesday. After qualifying is completed, the top 63 players will join defending champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. in three-game double-elimination match play Wednesday evening. Match play continues Thursday and Friday with the championship match scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT (noon PDT) on Friday.

Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Tom Baker reinforced his position as bowling’s dominant senior professional bowler by winning the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters Friday at the National Bowling Stadium. The 51-year-old Baker from King, N.C., defeated winners bracket finalist Bob Kelly of Dayton, Ohio, 686-612, and 645-575, in the three-game double-elimination conclusion to win his first Senior Masters title and the $18,000 first prize. It was his second senior tour major of the year having won the PBA Senior U.S. Open in June.
To get to the championship match, Baker won nine consecutive losers bracket matches. He won seven matches on Thursday after losing his second match Wednesday evening and then won two more Friday morning. His 12 overall match wins and 13 total matches are Senior Masters records.
“This has been an incredible tournament for me,” Baker said. “It was a real long day yesterday so I was a little worried about how I might feel for this morning’s matches. After taking a few shots this morning it didn’t take long to get comfortable.”
Friday morning Baker defeated three-time Team USA member Ron Mohr of Eagle River Alaska, 693-637, and Tim Ruelle of Racine, Wis., 719-641, before meeting Kelly for the championship.
“I used the same thought process today as I did for the whole tournament,” Baker said. “Read the lanes and make the right moves. I was really in synch with making the right adjustments and changes in equipment all week.
“I’ve really been working on the mental part of the game,” he added. “I’m to the point where I’m really comfortable with the adjustments I have to make.”
Baker’s Senior Masters win gives him four titles for the year which ties the record for most senior tour titles in a season with 2003 Senior Masters champion Dale Eagle and Pete Couture. Earlier this season Baker won a PBA senior tour record three consecutive titles which included his second career Senior U.S. Open victory.
Kelly, 54, who retired from General Motors to compete full time on the senior tour, looked at his second-place finish as a learning experience.
“I admit I have a lot to learn and this was a great experience for me,” Kelly said. “Today I learned that I needed to control my ball speed better. I was a little too pumped up and as a result started throwing it a little too hard.”
“I have no complaints,” he added. “This has been something I’ve aspired to do and I’m thrilled to be bowling with guys like Tom out here on the tour.” Kelly earned $9,000 for second.
Participating Senior Masters sponsors are Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC, and Eldorado Hotel and Casino, the Senior Masters headquarter hotel.

Baker sets blistering pace in USBC Senior Masters match play
Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Tom Baker mowed down his opponents in the losers bracket of the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters during Thursday's double-elimination match play competition at the National Bowling Stadium. Baker won all seven of his three-game matches averaging 244.2 and did not have a series below 703. He also rolled the first 300 game of the tournament in a match against Fred Mattson of Tacoma, Wash.
"I think this has to be one of the best, if not the best day I've ever had in bowling," he said. "But it was also one of the longest."
Baker, who makes his home in King, N.C., credits his commitment to becoming a more versatile player for his recent success on the PBA Senior Tour this year. He became the first bowler to win three consecutive senior tour titles which included his second Senior U.S. Open title.
"Years ago I was a pretty one-dimensional player," said the 51-year-old Baker. "I've had a lot of help from people like Brad Angelo, Mo Pinel and Rick Benoit who have given me more knowledge from an equipment and mechanics standpoint. You just can't be a one-style player anymore * you have to be versatile."
Baker admitted he put that knowledge to the test in today's match play.
"There was a big difference in the pairs that I bowled on today," Baker said. "I had to use a variety of lines and a few different balls."
In addition to Baker, the other three players still in contention for the Senior Masters title are Bob Kelly of Dayton, Ohio and Tim Ruelle of Racine, Wis., from the winners bracket, and three-time Team USA member Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, also still alive in the losers bracket.
The 54-year-old Kelly recently retired from General Motors to take on the challenge of competing on the senior tour. "I basically retired to bowl full-time," Kelly said. "So far it's been a heck of a learning experience but I'm just thrilled to death to be able to do this." Kelly is married to USBC Hall of Famer and former Team USA member Linda Kelly.
Match play continues Friday morning with the championship match set for noon PT. The winner will take home an $18,000 first prize.

Petraglia and Eagle among undefeated in USBC Senior Masters

Petraglia, who finished second in the 1997 Senior Masters, defeated Ernie Franklin of Winchester, N.H., 682-601, and Bob Hanson of Spokane, Wash., 634-614, in Wednesday evening's matches at the National Bowling Stadium.
"Two-0 and go to bed - that feels pretty good right now," Petraglia said. "I've been picking the right equipment and making the right adjustments so things are going well so far." Eagle, a 10-time senior tour titlist, defeated Terry Leong of Henderson, Nev., 643-554, and 2005 and 2006 PBA Senior U.S. Open champion Tom Baker, 643-554.
Like Petraglia, Eagle echoed the importance of making the right adjustments. I've made a lot of adjustments mainly in my delivery but they have been very small adjustments," Eagle said. "You've got to be versatile and have the little tricks to keep up with the changing conditions."
Top qualifier Roger Kossert was eliminated after losing his first two matches. Among those moving into the losers bracket were defending champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. and two-time Senior Masters champions Gary Dickinson and Pete Couture. After Wednesday's match play the field has been cut to 48 players. Competition continues with double-elimination match play Thursday and Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT (noon PDT) on Friday.

Kossert retains top qualifying spot heading into USBC Senior Masters match play
Roger Kossert of Lithia, Fla., held on to top qualifier honors with his 3,293 15-game pinfall heading into this evening's double-elimination match play. The field of 64 players consists of four former Senior Masters champions: Defending champion Vince Mazzanti, Gary Dickinson (1997, 2004), Pete Couture (1998, 2002) and Dale Eagle (2003).
The top 63 players from qualifying join Mazzanti in match play which begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a winners and losers bracket round at 9 p.m.
Jeff Suma and Steve Calyore tied for the 63rd and final qualifying spot requiring a one-game rolloff which was won by Calyore, 184-174.
The high game of the tournament thus far was a 296 shot by Carl Chavez of Albuquerque in second-round qualifying.

Gary Dickinson takes USBC Senior Masters qualifying lead
In the past three years United States Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson has had his share of ailments and health problems. He's had serious back and shoulder injuries and in November of 2004 suffered a heart attack. After a productive PBA Senior Tour season so far this year, which includes a win at last week's stop in Brentwood, Calif., he feels he's back in fighting shape*or at least pretty close to it.
Dickinson moved into the lead after USBC Senior Masters second-round qualifying Tuesday at the National Bowling Stadium with a 2,225 10-game pinfall. "I'm feeling the best I have in three years," said the 1997 and 2004 Senior Masters champion. "I'm not as strong as I'd like to be but I'm pretty close.
"After I had the heart attack the doctor put me on a strict exercise routine which includes a lot of walking and that has really helped. Things have improved to the extent that I feel like I'm in pretty good shape now."
In Tuesday's qualifying Dickinson had a five-game pinfall of 1,114 after rolling 1,111 in Monday's block. On Monday he played an inside shot but in his second block he was able to play his trademark "gutter" shot.
It was that gutter shot that helped launch a hall of fame career that includes eight PBA National Tour and 12 Senior Tour titles.
"I've had success playing inside and outside but I'm most comfortable playing the gutter," said the 63-year-old right-hander from Edmond, Okla. "After the first game today I was getting a great reaction from the gutter on the backend and never had to move."
If there has been a disappointment for Dickinson this season it has been his finish in the PBA Senior U.S. Open in June where he failed to make match play. "I was really disappointed with how I bowled there, so I want to make up for it here," he added.
The Senior Masters continues with the final five-game qualifying block for all competitors on Wednesday. After qualifying is completed, the top 63 players will join defending champion Vince Mazzanti Jr. in three-game double-elimination match play Wednesday evening. Match play continues Thursday and Friday with the championship match scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT (noon PDT) on Friday.

Tim Ruelle takes first-round qualifying lead in his first USBC Senior Masters
Tim Ruelle of Racine, Wis., averaged 225.2 to take the first-round qualifying lead in the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters Monday at the National Bowling Stadium. Bowling in his first Senior Masters, Ruelle had a 1,126 five-game pinfall to top the 319-player field. He had games of 228, 245, 211, 205 and 237.
"I was extremely happy with the ball reaction right from the start and really didn't have to make a lot of adjustments," said the 54-year-old pharmacist. "I was playing about the fourth board and was pretty comfortable there. I made some slight adjustments with my feet but that was about it."
Ruelle made the decision to bowl his first Senior Masters after an encouraging performance in the USBC Masters in Milwaukee last November.
"I didn't make the cut in the Masters but I shot 39 over and was pretty encouraged by that," the right-hander said. "I thought maybe I should come out here to see how I could do against guys my own age."
Ruelle has won several local and state titles in Wisconsin and was the 1975 Big 10 doubles and all-events champion bowling for the University of Wisconsin. "Right now I'm pretty confident," Ruelle added. "I'll be bowling the first squad tomorrow but I don't plan to do anything different."
Ruelle holds a three-pin lead over Jack Wallisch of Hot Springs Village, Ark., in second with 1,123 and a four-pin lead over two-time PBA National Tour titlist Pete McCordic of Katy, Texas in third with 1,122.
The Senior Masters continues with five-game qualifying blocks for all competitors July 11 and 12. After 15 qualifying games, the top 63 players will join Vince Mazzanti Jr. in three-game double-elimination match play beginning the evening of July 12 and continuing July 13 and 14. The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT (noon PDT) on July 14.
Participating Senior Masters sponsors are Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC, and Eldorado Hotel and Casino, the Senior Masters headquarter hotel.
