Kelly Kulick, John Janawicz lead Team USA Trials after Round 1

After the opening round of qualifying, Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., and John Janawicz of Winter Haven, Fla., lead the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials.
Kulick (pictured left) paced the women's division with a six-game total of 1,361 (226.83 average) while Janawicz narrowly led the men's field with 1,384 (230.67 average) at The Orleans Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
The players in the field earn points based on their finishing position in each round. After five rounds, the top three men and top three women with the least amount of points will advance to the stepladder finals Wednesday at 7 p.m. Pacific live on BowlTV.
Kulick put together games of 231, 277, 225, 194, 189 and 245 on the 38-foot Atlanta pattern, on which Kulick said she expected to bowl well.
"I realize it's a long week, but this is one of my stronger patterns," Kulick said. "Getting off to a good start makes my swing a little freer as the patterns start to get more challenging for me."
Sarah Lokker of New Baltimore, Mich., a member of Junior Team USA in 2014, finished second in the opening round with 1,298, while Elysia Current of Ephrata, Pa., was third with 1,295.
On the men's side, Janawicz (pictured right) finished the day with three strikes in the final frame to lead the field after shooting games of 229, 257, 207, 279, 232 and 180.
Ronnie Fujita of El Sobrante, Calif., finished second with 1,375, while Mike Fagan of Hurst, Texas, was third with 1,352.
"It's always good to get off to a really good start like this, especially since the past few years I've done just OK to start," Janawicz said. "To only get one point on the first day? You can't do any better than that. We'll see what happens tomorrow, though, because it's a new pattern and a new game plan."
Action shifts to the second round of the event, which will be contested on the 43-foot Tokyo pattern on Sunday. All rounds of the Team USA Trials are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
The top three men and top three women after five rounds of qualifying will be guaranteed spots on Team USA in 2014 and will bowl in the stepladder finals for the right to be declared champion, a spot in the QubicaAMF World Cup and prize money.
Two more men and two more women from the event will be selected to join Team USA, while five men and five women will be selected from a pool of eligible bowlers based on their bowling resumes and Trials performance if they competed.
A total of eight Junior Team USA spots - four boys and four girls - also are available. The top two boys and top two girls in the final points standings will earn automatic spots, while two boys and two girls spots will be at-large selections taken from either the Team USA Trials field or the finals field from the Junior Gold Championships held in July 2013. All bowlers 20 and under as of Jan. 1, 2014 are eligible for Junior Team USA.
