Liz Johnson to receive National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame's Excellence in Sports Award; David Haynes, Scott Norton, Dave Wodka win in Hawaii

PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (pictured) of St. Ann, Mo., is going to bowl a match in August where he'll be the odds-on favorite to win, but the real winner will be Minnesota cancer victims.

Weber will compete against a radio host from Minnesota radio station WCCO (830 am) and a representative from the KARE-TV (channel 11) sports staff in conjunction with the PBA50 Tour's end-of-season Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open at Island Xtreme Bowl in Welch, Minn., on Sunday, August 10, at approximately 6:30 p.m.

As part of the special match, host center manager Bob Micek will collect pledges-per-pin donations based on Weber's three-game total to benefit the Bowling Proprietors' Association of Minnesota's cancer fund. Further information about pledges will be announced soon.

In addition to Weber's charity match, 2012 USBC Senior Masters champion Mike Edwards (right) of Tulsa, Okla., is going to host a clinic on Saturday, August 9, at 5 p.m. for the kids who live in the Prairie Island Indian Community.

Liz Johnson to receive National Polish-American Achievement Award

Liz Johnson (pictured) of Cheektowaga, N.Y., the first woman to appear in the nationally-televised finals of a PBA Tour event (2005 Banquet Open in Wyoming, Mich., when she finished second to Tommy Jones) and the first woman to win a PBA Regional title (also in 2005 in Rome, N.Y.), will receive the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame's Excellence in Sports Award during the organization's 42nd annual induction dinner on June 19 in Troy, Mich.

Johnson, who also owns two PBA Women's Series titles, has won the Women's U.S. Open three times and the USBC Queens among her 14 national women's professional titles. She is the first bowler and first female to win the NPASHF's Excellence in Sports Award.

Athletes who will be inducted into the Polish-American Hall of Fame are Atlanta Braves/San Francisco Giants/San Diego Padres first baseman Ryan Klesko, heavyweight boxing champion Duane Bobick and Notre Dame/Buffalo Bills football star Walt Patulski.

PBA Regional Roundup: David Haynes, Scott Norton, Dave Wodka win in Hawaii

David Haynes (left) of Las Vegas put a perfect ending on the annual PBA West/Northwest tripleheader in Hawaii Sunday, defeating Scott Norton of Mission Viejo, Calif., 300-258, to win the Hickam AFB West/Northwest Open presented by Columbia 300 at Hickam Air Force Base. In addition to his eighth PBA Regional title, Haynes earned a $2,000 first prize in the final event of the Hawaii tripleheader.

Norton (right) won the John Gonsalves Memorial Open at Pearl Harbor Naval Station Lanes on Thursday, May 1, topping Chad Pojas of Wahiawa, Hawaii, 289-265, for his sixth PBA Regional title and $2,000, and Dave Wodka (below left) of Henderson, Nev., won the Kona Open at KBXtreme Lanes earlier the previous week to kick off the three-event series.

Roger Petrin from BelAir, Kan., defeated Andy Patterson of Tyler, Texas, 288-279, to win the seventh annual PBA Junction City Bowl Southwest/Midwest Open, presented by STORM, in Junction City, Kan., Sunday.

Petrin, the reigning PBA Southwest Region Rookie of the Year, started the championship match with nine strikes. Patterson was close to matching Petrin, throwing 11 strikes while leaving only a 7 pin in the fifth frame for a 279, forcing Petrin to throw a 10th strike to win. Petrin came through before leaving the 4-7 on his 11th attempt to end his bid for a perfect game.

Ronnie Russell (pictured right with host Dave Claxton, right) of Marion, Ind. defeated Patrick Dombrowski of Parma, Ohio by 274 pins to win the PBA Country Club Lanes Central Open presented by Motiv at Country Club Lanes in Elkhart, Ind., on Sunday. Russell finished with a 10-2 match play record and a total of 4,710 pins for 20 games, including match play bonus pins, to earn $2,500 and his eighth PBA Regional title.

Amateur Scott Schmal of Dyer, Ind., defeated Trevor Yonan of Sheboygan, Wis., 231-191, to win the PBA Bowl-A-Vard Midwest Open at Bowl-A-Vard Lanes in Madison, Wis., on Sunday. Schmal collected $2,000, but does not get credit for a PBA title because he is not a member.

The May regional schedule continues over the May 9-11 weekend with the PBA and PBA50 Baldo Campana Central Opens benefiting the Lorain County Kids Fund at Rebman Recreation in Lorain, Ohio; the Rocky Mount South Open at The Bowling Center in Rocky Mount, N.C.; the Midcontinent Communications Midwest Open presented by DV8 at Empire Bowl in Sioux Falls, S.D., and the Vanessa Brown Homes West Open presented by Columbia 300 at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto, Calif.

The May 16-18 schedule features the PBA Lightning Lanes Challenge for non-winners in Marion, N.C., and the PBA/PBA50 Daffodil Bowl Opens presented by U.S. Foods in Puyallup, Wash.

Memorial Day weekend will include the CBS Sports Network television finals of Oklahoma's Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing in Shawnee, Okla., along with a Saturday-Sunday PBA Southwest Region event.

Memorial Day weekend also will feature the Colony Park Lanes East Challenge (a reduced entry fee non-champions event) in York, Pa.; the Brookmont Bowling Center Midwest/Central Challenge (a non-champions event) and the Brookmont Bowling Center Midwest/Central Re-Entry Classic presented by Radical Bowling in Kankakee, Ill., and a pair of West Region PBA50 events in Arizona – the fifth annual Lona King Sagurao West Open at Johnson Lanes in Sun City West followed by the Miller Lite Western Open at Starlite Lanes in Flagstaff.

The PBA Midwest Region's Midcontinent Communications Midwest Open presented by DV8 will be televised live on Midco Sports Network on Sunday, May 11, from Empire Bowl in Sioux Falls, S.D. The noon CDT telecast will serve an MSN audience in western Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Reminder: Applications for the 2014 PBA Billy Welu Scholarship Award must be postmarked by June 15. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

To be eligible candidates must be amateur bowlers who are currently in college (preceding the application date) and maintaining at least a 2.5/4.0 GPA or equivalent.
