Defending team champion falls short at 2014 USBC Open Championships

The members of Lodge Lanes Too of Orlando, Fla., rolled the highest score in United States Bowling Congress Open Championships history, 3,538, on their way to the Regular Team title at the 2013 event, and they returned to the National Bowling Stadium on June 10 to put that title on the line.
With the bar even higher this year, they knew it would take another record performance, but they fell short with games of 1,155, 1,067 and 1,099 for a 3,321 total. Motion Plus Lanes of Cudahy, Wis., leads with a new-record 3,561.

"It just shows how hard it is to win here," said Gaines, who made his 26th tournament appearance.
"We set a record last year, and the same guys came back and bowled 200 pins less on an equally-playable condition. We definitely left some pins out there, but that's going to happen. I tell the guys that, but you can't dwell on it. You have to get all you can and put yourself in good position for tomorrow."
Their companion team, Lodge Lanes Kids (pictured), made a run at the lead in Regular Team but settled into third place after games of 1,194, 1,156 and 1,177 for a 3,527 series, the fifth-highest team total in 111 years of tournament history.
Jon Trzcinski led the way for Lodge Lanes Kids with a 752 set and was followed by Jeff Ussery (737), Shawn Lee (694), Aaron Lorincz (683) and Matt Gilman (661).
Michael Tountas (pictured) of Tucson, Ariz., joined his father, USBC Hall of Famer Pete Tountas, in the record books at the USBC Open Championships after firing the 30th perfect game of the 2014 event June 9.
The younger Tountas, a 47-year-old right-hander, rolled games of 247, 300 and 212 for a career-best 759 series during his team event at the National Bowling Stadium.
Pete Tountas is a three-time Professional Bowlers Association Tour titlist, and his success on bowling's biggest stage includes a victory over fellow hall of famer Buzz Fazio at the 1968 USBC Masters and a Regular Team title in 1976.
There will be two live stream broadcasts this week at the USBC Open Championships.
On June 12 at 10 p.m. EDT, former Team USA member Fero Williams will lead his team onto the lanes at the National Bowling Stadium, and the group includes George Gohagan III, a member of the Browning Pontiac squad that claimed the Regular Team title in 2006 and Team All-Events crown at the NBS in 2007.
On June 16 at 6 p.m. Eastern, two-time Open Championships titlist Steve Kloempken and his two talented teams will take their shot at the 43-foot Sport-certified team lane condition. The group includes past Team USA member David Haynes and 1981 Regular Doubles champion Ted Hannahs.
