Mike Fagan remains unchallenged, wins qualifying in Norwegian Open 2014 by Brunswick

    EBT & PBA champion finishes atop the leaderboard with 1481 total (246.83 average) as the 222-player field is cut to 60 players; Squad 22 leader Henrik Hansen rolls the 24th 1400-series to jump into 22nd place; score to make the cut in 42nd place is 1360 (226.67 average)

    2014EBT17HenrikHansen2.jpg2014EBT17MikeFagan.jpgThere was only one change to the leaderboard in the last qualifying squad as leader Henrik Hansen (pictured left) of Norway managed the 24th 1400-series of the Norwegian Open 2014 by Brunswick to leap into 22nd place in the final qualifying standings.

    The 19-year-old power bowler had games of 269, 239, 191, 236, 224 and 246 to lead Squad 22 at Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo, Norway with 1405 total and an average of 234.17.

    Mike Fagan (right), United States, a five-time European Bowling Tour titlist and four time PBA champion, led the 222-player field from eight countries to win the qualifying with 1481 or an average of 246.83 for six games. Fagan' series included one of five 300 games this week. Erland Lund, Rune Andersen, Mads Sandbækken, all from Norway, and Dane Rasmus Bering had the others.

Danish two-hander Markus Bergendorff (right), also 18, was further eight pins back in third place with 1464.

    The fourth position belonged to Erland Lund, Norway, on 1463 with fellow countryman Tore Rokkones in fifth place with 1452 and Carsten Warming Hansen of Denmark in sixth place with 1449.

    Tor Inge Jansen, Norway, was in seventh place with 1448. Completing the top eight was Mads Sandbækken, Norway, who toppled 1441 pins, an average of 240.17.

    Qualifiers 9-16 (three byes), 17-24 (two byes) and 25-28 (one bye) will also miss the seminal rounds later this evening. Hansen's feat came at the expenses of Nina Flack (left) and Rebecka Larsen (right) of Sweden, who slipped out of the top 24 and top 28, respectively.

    The top three women in qualifying received guaranteed extra prizes which drew a field of 45 ladies. Patcharin Torgersen (below left) of Norway, who toppled 1431 pins including handicap, finished in 12th place to pocket 5.000 Norwegian Kronor or approx. 610 Euro.

    Fredrik Tjernes (below right) of Norway took the 42nd and final qualifying post with 1360 and an average of 226.67.

    Also surviving the qualifying cut were 18 "wild cards" including the next two players from a Squad 1-7 leaderboard, the next four women, four juniors and four seniors, all outside the top 42, and finally two players each from the Turbo 1 and 2 list (highest score in qualifying game 5 and 6, resp. Those 18 players were ranked from 43rd to 60th place according to the tournament rules.

    2014EBT17FredrikTjernes.jpgPlayers seeded 29th to 60th after qualifying will bowl in Semifinals 1 & 2 slated for 9 and 10.30 p.m. on Saturday evening. The finals will be held on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.

    2014NorwegianOpenLogo.jpg The Norwegian Open 2014 by Brunswick is the 17th stop of the 2014 European Bowling Tour and the seventh out of nine EBT "Satellite" events this season. The tournament will be held from Oct. 3-12 at Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo.

    The total prize fund is 239.000 Kronor or 29.000 Euro with 40.000 NOK or approx. 4.850 Euro going to the winner. The prize money for the top three women in qualifying is guaranteed (5.000, 3.000 and 2.000 Kronor). Low to cash is 60th place worth 1.000 NOK or 120 Euro.

    Qualifying of the Norwegian Open began Friday, Oct. 3 and runs through Saturday, Oct. 11 with the final Squad 22 scheduled for 5 p.m. local time (CEST). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, an equality handicap provided to women in every event on the European Bowling Tour.

    Total 60 players will advance to the finals on Saturday (Semifinal Round 1 and 2) and Sunday, Oct. 11 & 12:
    • the top 42 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • two players from a separate leaderboard of Squad 1-7, who are not among the top 42
    • the next four women
    • the next four juniors (must not be born before Sept. 1, 1996)
    • the next four seniors (must be 50 years of age at the first day of the tournament)
    • and two players each from the Turbo 1 and 2 list (highest score in qualifying game 5 and 6, respectively; separate fee necessary).

    The top 8 qualifiers earn four byes and will be seeded in Round 4, places 9-16 go to Round 3, places 17-24 start in Round 2 and places 25-28 begin in Round 1. The other 32 finalists advance to Saturday's Semifinal Round 1 which begins at 9 p.m. CEST.

    The top 24 players after three game scratch advance to the Semifinal Round 2, which gets underway at 10:30 p.m. Those 24 bowl another three games with the pinfall carried over. The top 12 qualify for Final Round 1 starting on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

    The remaining forty players will determine the champion in five three-game rounds (rounds 1-4 starting from scratch). The field will be trimmed from 40 to 32, 24, 16, and then eight who bowl a final three-game block with the pinfall from Round 4 carried forward.

    The player with the highest six-game total will earn the EBT title, 50 ranking points and the 40.000 NOK top prize.

    2014EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2014 European Bowling Tour features 19 tournaments in 13 countries. In its 15th season, the EBT consists of two Platinum, six Gold, three Silver and eight Satellite tournaments. The total prize fund is almost one million Euro.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will compete in the eighth EBT Masters July 6, 2015 at Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain, immediately following the III Brunswick Madrid Challenge.
