Pavel Sobolev, Maria Bulanova capture the titles in 2nd Hurghada Open

    Pavel Sobolev of Belarus and Russia's Maria Bulanova (pictured left, l-r) emerged as men's and women's division champions in the 2nd Hurghada Open International Friendship Bowling Tournament 2015, which concluded Thursday, Feb. 5, with the TV stepladder finals.

    2015HurghadaDmitryShilkinEslamEad.jpgSobolev, who led the men's round robin match play to earn the No. 1 seed, sat and watched the opening match in which Eslam Ead (right with Shilkin, left) of Egypt ousted last year's runner-up Dmitry Shilkin, Belarus, 184-177.

    In an all-Egyptian semi-final match, No. 2 seed, Hossam Sobhy edged Ead by four pins, 196-192, to set up a title match with Sobolev.

    2015HurghadaPavelSobolevHossamSobhy.jpgThe tournament leader (left), who topped Sobhy (right) by 25 pins in match play, bowled the highest game of the men's TV finals to defeat the local favorite, 221-194, to earn the title and the $4,000 top prize.

    Sobhy earned $2,500 for second place, Ead received $1,500 for third place and Shilkin took home $1,200 for fourth place.

    2015HurghadaMariaBulanovaAliaaIsmail.jpgThe women's stepladder final featured two Egyptian and two Russian women. Aliaa Ismail flew past her compatriot Sheren Saleh in an all-Egyptian opening match, 242-156.

    Last year's runner-up, Maria Bulanova (right, with Ismail, right), the youngest player ever to win a European Bowling Tour title at the age of 15, equally easily defeated Ismail in the semi-final, 207-146, to set up an all-Russian title match with top-seeded Maria Koshel, who defeated Bulanova in the position round, 200-165, to earn the No. 1 seed.

    2015HurghadaMariaKoshelMariaBulanova.jpgBulanova (right) took revenge defeating Koshel (left), 190-173, en route to claim the title and the $2,000 first prize. Koshel got $1,000 for second place while Ismail and Saleh garnered $500 and $300 for third and fourth place, respectively.

    The 2nd Hurghada Open International Friendship Bowling Tournament 2014 was held from January 31 thru February 5 at Bounce bowling center, a 10-laner in Hurghada, the capital city of Egypt's Red Sea Governorate.

    Total 70 players, 53 men and 17 women, from Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Egypt participated in the event, which offered total prize fund of $20,000, $16,000 for men (places 1-16) and $4,000 for women (places 1-6).

    Men and women bowled in separate division. After 16 games of qualifying (four 4-game blocks over four day, no re-entries), the top 10 men plus the next two Egyptians and top five women plus the next Egyptian advanced to round robin match play including a position round match.

    Starting match play from scratch, players received 10 pins bonus for each win and 5 pins for each tie. The top 4 men after 12 games and the top 4 women after six games advanced to the TV stepladder finals.
