2013PBAMidwestSeanSwanson.jpgFuneral services have been scheduled for Saturday in Springfield, Mo., for Sean Swanson (pictured), a 19-time PBA Regional title winner from Springfield, Mo., who died on his 46th birthday Sunday after a three-year struggle to overcome a rare form of cancer called Pleomorphic Sarcoma.

Swanson, a Midwest Region resident, competed extensively in the PBA Southwest Region where he won 16 of his titles. He will be inducted into the PBA Southwest Region Hall of Fame on Aug. 28 during ceremonies at the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort in Shawnee, Okla.

Swanson, who had a highly successful amateur career before joining the PBA 18 years ago, won his last PBA title in Fort Campbell, Ky., in 2013. In his 70 PBA Tour appearances, he made the TV finals once, finishing second in the 1998 Oregon Open when he lost to Danny Wiseman in the title match, 213-191.

Swanson is survived by his wife, Angie; son Cabel and daughter Victoria, and stepson Justin.

PBA Regional Update: Marshall Kent wins first PBA Regional title

2015PBA07MarshallKent.jpgMarshall Kent (pictured left) of Yakima , Wash., posted a 7-1 match play record and 4,315 pins for 16 games Sunday to win his first PBA Regional title in the PBA Daffodil Bowl Northwest Open, presented by U.S. Foods, in Puyallup, Wash.

The 2014 PBA Rookie of the Year, who earned $2,000, rolled three 300 games on his way to a 259-pin margin of victory over Rob Edwards of Vancouver, Wash. Edwards had a 5-3 match play record and 4,056 pins for his 16 games, including match play bonus pins.

In the companion PBA50 Daffodil Bowl Northwest Open presented by Sunset Chevrolet, Rob Rice of Sunnyside, Wash., went 5-3 and knocked down 3,896 total pins for 16 games to top Michael Karch of Edgewood, Wash., for his seventh Northwest Senior Regional title. Karch had a 4-4 match play record and 3,890 pins.

2015PBAColonyParkLanesEasternChallengeRyanYelle.jpgAmateur Ryan Yelle (pictured right with Colony Park Lanes North proprietor Rick Mitchell, left) of South Easton, Mass. defeated Noel Vega of Kew Gardens, N.Y., 220-190, to win the PBA Colony Park Lanes Eastern Challenge in York, Pa., on Saturday. PBA Challenge events are open to any member or non-member who has never won a PBA event.

Yelle, bowling in his second regional event, was undefeated in the bracket elimination finals. Vega had opens in two of the last three frames to spoil any chance he had to win. Yelle earned $2,000 for the win, but does not receive credit for a PBA Regional title because he is a non-member. Vega earned $1,300 for his second runner-up finish in the past three East Challenge events.

Closing the May schedule will be a traditional West Region PBA50 doubleheader preceding the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open in Las Vegas. Following the 6th annual PBA50 Lona King Saguaro West Open at Johnson Lanes in Sun City West, Ariz., which ended May 27, Starlite Lanes in Flagstaff, Ariz., will then host the PBA50 Miller Lite Western Open Thursday and Friday.

The PBA Senior U.S. Open, set for June 1-5 at Suncoast Bowling Center, will be covered from start to finish on PBA's Xtra Frame online bowling channel. To subscribe, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link.

    Quick Notes

2015USBCQueensLizJohnson.jpgHelped by their performances in the USBC Queens last week in Green Bay, Wis., PBA members Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, and Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., have earned the right to represent Team USA at the 2015 Pan American Games this July in Toronto. Pluhowsky finished third in the Queens; Johnson (pictured) won the USBC tiara for the second time.

The qualifying process was based on performance at the 2015 USBC Team USA Trials and the 2015 USBC Queens. Earlier in the year, PBA star Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., and amateur Devin Bidwell of Wichita, Kan., were announced as Team USA's men's representatives for the Pan Am Games.
