Dominic Barrett, Mika Koivuniemi add their names to the leaderboard in Madrid

    Squad 17 & 18 bowlers take control of the 142-player field in III Brunswick Madrid Challenge; Osku Palermaa rolls the tournament's first 300; score to make the qualifying cut in 38th place is 1271 (211.83 average)

    2015EBT09IldemaroRuiz.jpgEleven players of squads 17 and 18 positioned themselves in the top 15 in the qualifying of the III Brunswick Madrid Challenge currently underway at Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain.

    Dominic Barrett (pictured left) of England and Finnish-American Mika Koivuniemi led the two squads on Thursday (squads 15 & 16 have been canceled) with 1438 and 1427, respectively, to move into second and third place in the overall qualifying standings.

    Ildemaro Ruiz Jr. (above right) of Venezuela remained atop the 142-player leaderboard from 21 countries with 1487 and an average of 247.83 for six games.

Two-time PBA Player of the Year Koivuniemi (left), a 15-time PBA and 11-time EBT champion, led Squad 17 by averaging 237.83, including high games of 279 and 257.

    World and European champion Martin Larsen (right) of Sweden was second to Barrett in Squad 18 with 1425 to leap inti fourth place. Venezuela's Karen Marcano is the best of 34 women in the field and one of 12 on or above the cut line with 1419, including 48 pins handicap.

    Another three players of Squad 18 cracked the 1400-bar. Current EBT point ranking leader Jesper Svensson, a two-handed lefty from Sweden, toppled 1407 pins to take seventh place. Finnish two-hander Osku Palermaa (right) rolled the tournament's first 300 in his 1404 to sit in eighth place.

    World youth champion Pontus Andersson of Sweden landed three pins behind in ninth place with 1401. Rounding out the top 10 was Richard Teece (below left) of England, who was next to Koivuniemi with 1392.

    With eight more squads to come, four on Friday and four on Saturday, the score to make the qualifying cut in 38th place is 1271, an average of 211.83 including handicap), set by Mie Agerbo of Denmark.

    Qualifying continues on Friday, July 3, with Squads 19-22 scheduled to start at 9 a.m., 1, 5 and 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time.

    2015BrunswickMadridChallengeLogo_small.jpg The III Brunswick Madrid Challenge is the 10th stop of the 2015 European Bowling Tour season and the third and last EBT "Silver" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from June 27 - July 5 at 20-lane Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain.

    Players will compete for total prize money of 40.250 Euro with 6.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.000 to the runner-up and 2.000 to the third place finisher. Last-to-cash payout (50th place) is 300 Euro.

    Qualifying got underway on Saturday, June 27, and runs through Saturday, July 4, with the final qualifying Squad 26 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated to start 30 minutes past Midnight. The qualifying winner receives a 750 Euro bonus.

    Women receive 8 pins handicap each game (maximum score is 300), a standard on the European Bowling Tour. The top 2 women in qualifying (before Desperado Squad) earn 750 and 500 Euro, respectively.

    Total 50 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, July 5 - the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, the top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 and the top 5 of squads 9-12 who are not among the top 38, and the top four players of the Desperado Squad. The top 10 qualifiers will receive two byes while qualifiers 11-20 will get a first-round bye.

    The first three rounds of the finals feature four games from scratch. The field will be trimmed to 30, 20 and then 10 players who will advance to another four-game round with the Round 3 total being carried forward.

    The top 3 with the highest eight-game total will advance to the stepladder finals. The No. 2 and 3 seeds open the action with a one-game shootout match. The winner goes against the No. 1 seed for the title and 6.000 Euro first prize.

    2015EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2015 European Bowling Tour currently consists of 17 tournaments in 13 countries featuring three "Platinum" events, three "Gold", three "Silver" and eight "Satellite" events. All 17 tournaments together offer total prize fund of 870.000 Euro or 966.250 U.S. Dollar.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will compete in the 9th EBT Masters July 25, 2016 at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino following the 12th San Marino Open.

    III Brunswick Madrid Challenge - Standings after Qualifying Squad 18/26


    Top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 (places 39-41) and top 5 of squads 9-12 (places 42-46) who are not among the top 38, and top four players of the Desperado Squad (places 47-50) will advance to Sunday's finals.

    Tie Rules (Qualifying)
    In case of a tie in the qualifying, "the highest positioned player will be the player scoring the highest total of all counting qualification games minus the score of the lowest game. If a tie still exists, the highest positioned player will be the player with the highest total of all counting qualification games minus the score of the two lowest games, etc."
