Jesper Svensson leads field of 50 into the finals of the III Brunswick Madrid Challenge

    Swede averages 248.33 to pace the 204-player field, wins 750 Euro bonus; Joline Persson Planefors (SWE), Diana Zavjalova (LAT) top the 16 women advancing to the finals, earn 750 and 500 Euro bonuses; score to make cut in 38th place is 1359 (226.50 average)

    The two-handed lefty, who leads the European Bowling Tour men's point ranking, toppled 1490 pins, an average of 248.33, including games 279, 198, 253, 216, 299 and 245. The three-time EBT titlist pocketed a 750 Euro bonus.

    In addition Svensson and the next nine players in the standings receive two byes and will start the finals in Round Three. Ildemaro Ruiz Jr. of Venezuela was three pins behind Svensson with 1487. Joonas Jehkinen (above right) of Finland was further three pins back in third place with 1484.

    2015EBT10JolinePerssonPlanefors.jpg2015EBT10DianaZavlalova.jpgTwo-time EBT women's point ranking winner (2011, 2013) Joline Persson Planefors of Sweden was the best of 53 women in the 204-player field from 25 countries (an increase of more than 20 percent compared to last year) with 1473 including eight pins women's handicap each game.

    Fellow European champion and USBC Queens winner, Diana Zavjalova (right), Latvia, was just one pin behind after leading the final Squad 26 with 1472. By virtue of finishing qualifying 1, 2 in the women's ranking, Persson Planefors and Zavjalova received earn 750 and 500 Euro bonuses.

    2015EBT10DominicBarrett2.jpg2015EBT10OskuPalermaa2.jpgSquad 24 and 25 leaders, Dominic Barrett (left) of England and Osku Palermaa (right) of Finland, improved their previous high series to move into fifth and sixth place. 10-time EBT champion Barrett led Squad 24 with 1468 and Palermaa, 13-time EBT titlist, who had the tournament's lone 300 game in his 1404 effort in Squad, posted 1464 in Squad 25.

    Rounding out the top 10 were John Wells, England (1460), Birgit Pöppler, Germany (1455) and Markus Jansson, Sweden (1448). Rebecka Larsen of Sweden, who was second to Zavjalova in the last squad with 1447, missed the top 10 by one pin to finish in 11th place.

    Jeroen van Geel (left) of the Netherlands and former world champion Mai Ginge Jensen (right) of Denmark were the only players of Squad 23, who positioned themselves above the cut line. Van Geel led the squad with 1386 to finish in 27th place and Jensen's 1367 was good for 37th place.

    Carlos Lee Llamas (below left) of Mexico beat out Rodolfo Madriz from Costa Rica for the 38th and last spot to advance from the overall leaderboard by four pins, 1359 (226.50) to 1355.

    Joining the top 38, plus three players from squads 1-8 and five players from squads 9-12 in the finals were Mats Maggi, Belgium ((268); Dave Wodka, United States (259); Elliot Crosby, England (258) and Marek Talpa, Czech Republic (257).

    34 men and 16 women advanced to the finals starting Sunday, July 5, at 9 a.m. CEST.

    2015BrunswickMadridChallengeLogo_small.jpgThe III Brunswick Madrid Challenge is the 10th stop of the 2015 European Bowling Tour season and the third and last EBT "Silver" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from June 27 - July 5 at 20-lane Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain.

    Players will compete for total prize money of 40.250 Euro with 6.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.000 to the runner-up and 2.000 to the third place finisher. Last-to-cash payout (50th place) is 300 Euro.

    Qualifying got underway on Saturday, June 27, and concluded Saturday, July 4, with the Desperado Squad. The qualifying winner received a 750 Euro bonus.

    Women receive 8 pins handicap each game (maximum score is 300), a standard on the European Bowling Tour. The top 2 women in qualifying (before Desperado Squad) earned 750 and 500 Euro, respectively.

    Total 50 players qualified for the finals on Sunday, July 5 - the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, the top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 and the top 5 of squads 9-12 who were not among the top 38, and the top four players of the Desperado Squad. The top 10 qualifiers receive two byes while qualifiers 11-20 get a first-round bye.

    The first three rounds of the finals feature four games from scratch. The field will be trimmed to 30, 20 and then 10 players who will advance to another four-game round with the Round 3 total being carried forward.

    The top 3 with the highest eight-game total will advance to the stepladder finals. The No. 2 and 3 seeds open the action with a one-game shootout match. The winner goes against the No. 1 seed for the title and 6.000 Euro first prize.

    2015EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2015 European Bowling Tour currently consists of 17 tournaments in 13 countries featuring three "Platinum" events, three "Gold", three "Silver" and eight "Satellite" events. All 17 tournaments together offer total prize fund of 870.000 Euro or 966.250 U.S. Dollar.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will compete in the 9th EBT Masters July 25, 2016 at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino following the 12th San Marino Open.

    III Brunswick Madrid Challenge - Standings after Qualifying and Desperado Squad


    Top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 (places 39-41) and top 5 of squads 9-12 (places 42-46) who are not among the top 38, and top four players of the Desperado Squad (places 47-50) advance to Sunday's finals.

    300 games (1) - Osku Palermaa.

    Tie Rules (Qualifying)
    In case of a tie in the qualifying, "the highest positioned player will be the player scoring the highest total of all counting qualification games minus the score of the lowest game. If a tie still exists, the highest positioned player will be the player with the highest total of all counting qualification games minus the score of the two lowest games, etc."
