Austrian national team bowler Michael Loos averaged 243.83 in the fifth qualifying Squad Wednesday at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria, to overtake the lead in Singles qualifying and in the Doubles competition of the 13th Columbia 300 Vienna Open.

Loos fired games of 263, 266, 246, 217, 256 and 215 to leap from seventh to first place to lead the 129-player field from 11 countries with 1463.

Qualifying in Vienna is traditionally contested as a Doubles tournament. Loos teamed with previous leader Thomas Gross (above, l-r) to set the pace in Doubles with 2773, a 231.08 average. Gross contributed 1310. The top 20 Doubles at the end of the qualifying will cash.

As one of the leaders of Squads 1-8, Loos will earn an automatic berth into Sunday's finals in the unlikely event that he will not finish in the top 52 (in 2014, 52nd place was 1307). If he finishes in the top 52, the automatic spot goes to the next qualifier in order. If he finishes in the top 8, he will bypass the first round of the finals.

2015EBT14FrancoisLouw.jpgGross, who won the 2009 Vienna Open, slipped to second place with 1412. Francois Louw (left) of South Africa led the sixth squads on Wednesday evening to jump into third place with 1357 (226.17). Louw posted games of 254, 216, 215, 206, 258 and 208.

Czech Republic's Jiri Hindrak and Jaroslav Lorenc slipped to fourth and sixth place with 1354 and1341, respectively.

Ivonne Gross (right) of Austria is the best of 22 women in ninth place with 1309, including 48 pins handicap.

2015EBT14IvonneGross.jpg Vlastimil Chladek of Slovakia currently holds the No. 52 score to beat to advance with 1153 or an average of 192.17. In case of a tie in the qualifying, "the highest positioned player will be the player scoring the highest total of all counting qualification games minus the score of the lowest game".

Qualifying commences on Thursday, October 1, with Squads 7 & 8 scheduled to start at 2 and 6 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST).
