Leo Grundschober averages over 233 to take the pole position in Men's European Champions Cup

    2015ECCLeoGrundschober2.jpg2015ECCMarekTalpa.jpgLeopold Grundschober (pictured left) of Austria took the pole position in the qualifying of the 38th European Champions Cup after the first eight-game block which concluded Thursday at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino.

    Grundschober rolled games of 235, 258, 212, 203, 233, 247, 254 and 225 in B Squad to lead the field of 38 players from 37 countries with 1867 pinfall total and an average of 233.38. Heading into the final qualifying block on Friday, Grundschober holds 25-pin lead over Marek Talpa (right), Czech Republic.

    Talpa, a one-time European Bowling Tour champion, closed out his series with a high game of 269 to help grab second place on 1842, a 230.25 average.

The Junior Team Sweden member and son of Bowling Coaches Hall of Famer Magnus Johnson had games of 207, 236, 246, 203, 268, 210, 225 and 234.

    European champion Joonas Jähi (right) of Finland was next to Johnson in A Squad and fell to fourth place with 1821 (227.83). Rounding out the top 5 was 2014 ECC champion Tom van der Vliet, Netherlands, with 1812 (226.50).

    The country of the defending champion is the only team which is allowed to send two players to the Championships. Van der Vliet's team mate Ton Plummen currently holds the 16th and last spot to survive the qualifying cut with 1676 or an average of 209.50.

    The men are done for today and will return on Friday at 9 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. CEST for the second block of qualifying. Women Group A and B will conclude their qualifying today at 1.30 and 6 p.m. respectively.

    2015ECCLogo.jpg The 38th European Champions Cup will take place from October 18-25 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino featuring the men's and women's national champions or point ranking leaders of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation member federations as well as the defending ECC champions.

    All 38 men and 38 women from 37 countries, including defending champions Birgit Pöppler of Germany and Tom van der Vliet, Netherlands, will roll two eight-game blocks of qualifying Wednesday through Friday on a 40 foot oil pattern. For more information Rose'n Bowl read the Lane Map Guide.

    The top 16 men and 16 women will carry over their qualifying pins into Round 1. After another eight games the top 8 will advance to Round 2. Pinfall will continue to carry over. Those 8 will bowl four more games to cut to the top 4 who will determine the champion in best-of-three games matches. In the semi-finals, No. 1 will meet No. 4 and No. 2 will take on No. 3.
