Kim Bolleby, Yanee Saebae win Thailand Open from top seed

Kim Bolleby and Yanee Saebae gave Thailand a clean sweep of the men's and women's Open Masters titles in the 42nd MWA-SINGHA Thailand International Open Sunday at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothin in Bangkok.
Bolleby (pictured left) and Saebae, who averaged 240 and 230, respectively, in the final six-game block to earn the No. 1 seed for the six-player stepladder finals, had the advantage of having to lose two games to suffer defeat.
Bolleby sealed his victory with the first game, defeating second seeded Alex Liew (left) of Malaysia for the men's title, 248-191. The former Swedish youth international, who now bowls for Thailand, earned 300,000 Baht ($8,550) along with his second Thailand Open title since 2014.
Liew earned the right to bowl Bolleby for the title by defeating Norman Cai (right) of Singapore and Annop Arromsaranon, Thailand, in the semifinal match, 228-189-157. Arromsaranon posted a 210 to survive a close opening match against Singapore's Cheah Ray Han (208) and Ryan Lalisang of Indonesia (201).
On the women's side, Saebae (left) fell to No. 3 seed and 2010 Thailand Open champion, Tannya Roumimper of Indonesia in the first game, 209-199, but rebounded with big 251-189 win in the decisive game to capture her first title in the biggest bowling event in her home country and the 100,000 Baht first prize (US$2,850).
Roumimper (below left) rolled a big 246 game in the semifinal to hold off Malaysia's Nur Syazwani Sahar (232) and Sin Li Jane (202). In an all-Malaysian opening round, Nur (below right) flew past Hee Kar Yen and Sharon Koh, 239-188-180.
The 42nd MWA-SINGHA Thailand International Open, which was held from April 11-17 at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothin in Bangkok, Thailand, drew 86 men and 47 women from 18 countries (Australia, China, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Macau, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, United States, Vietnam, and Thailand).

Bolleby (pictured left) and Saebae, who averaged 240 and 230, respectively, in the final six-game block to earn the No. 1 seed for the six-player stepladder finals, had the advantage of having to lose two games to suffer defeat.


Liew earned the right to bowl Bolleby for the title by defeating Norman Cai (right) of Singapore and Annop Arromsaranon, Thailand, in the semifinal match, 228-189-157. Arromsaranon posted a 210 to survive a close opening match against Singapore's Cheah Ray Han (208) and Ryan Lalisang of Indonesia (201).

Roumimper (below left) rolled a big 246 game in the semifinal to hold off Malaysia's Nur Syazwani Sahar (232) and Sin Li Jane (202). In an all-Malaysian opening round, Nur (below right) flew past Hee Kar Yen and Sharon Koh, 239-188-180.


Qualifying in the men's and women's Open Masters divisions featured three five-game blocks over three days (total 15 games). All participants were split into four squads (A, B, C and D).
The top 3 local and the top 3 overseas qualifiers in both divisions earned one bye and were seeded in Round Three.
The top 26 men in the Mixed Pool plus the top 4 of the Desperado Squad and the top 18 women in the Mixed Pool advanced to Round Two. Each player bowled six games scratch to cut to the top 18 men and the top 8 women.
The remaining 24 men and 14 women bowled another six-game block scratch to cut to the top 6 players.
