Scott Weber of LaSalle, Ill., whose best finish in a Professional Bowlers Association tournament was second in a QubicaAMF PBA50 regional event, averaged 253 to lead qualifying Saturday in the PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open at Liberty Lanes.

The 51-year-old Weber, who is no relation to the famous Weber bowling family, bowled a 2,025 eight-game pinfall total with games of 258, 210, 238, 258, 288, 257, 280 and 236. He holds a 41-pin lead over six-time PBA Tour winner Ryan Ciminelli (pictured above) of Cheetowaga, N.Y., who finished qualifying with a 1,984 pinfall (248 average).

"I don't know if I can believe it – it's a dream come true." said Weber, who topped a field filled with many PBA Tour stars.

"I was pretty nervous at the start but after the first game I was able to settle down. It's tough to do but that's part of the game. I just took some deep breaths and eventually settled into a rhythm."

Weber and Ciminelli led a group of 16 players who advanced to Sunday's match play round beginning at 9 a.m. CT. After match play is completed, the top five players will advance to the stepladder finals scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m.

Trying for his second consecutive win of the 2016 season, Ciminelli won the recent PBA Maine Shootout in March.

The PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open is the second of 10 Xtra Frame events that will pay the PBA member with the highest points total at the conclusion of the series a $10,000 bonus. The PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open continues Sunday with live coverage on PBA's online bowling channel.
