As qualifying leader for two tournaments this season, two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Las Vegas is on his way to making it three after averaging 246.8 to lead first round qualifying Monday in the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV.

Mohr (pictured) bowled a 1,975 eight-game pinfall total with games of 244, 278, 199, 237, 258, 235, 247 and 277 at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood, Calif., to hold a 49-pin lead over Robert Brown of Cody, Wyo., in second with 1,926.

Mohr, an eight-time PBA50 Tour titlist, led qualifying in last week's PBA50 Fountain Valley Open with a 241 average and averaged 251 to lead qualifying in the UnitedHealthcare PBA50 Sun Bowl in The Villages in April where he finished second to Pete Weber after losing 204-162 in the title match.

"I feel like I'm bowling the best I have the last couple of years, but it is becoming a bit of an issue that I can't continue the momentum of qualifying into match play and win," said the 60-year-old Mohr, whose last win came in the 2012 Senior Decatur (Ill.) Open. "It kind of seems like I can throw the ball great until I have to.

"I don't have any excuses," Mohr added. "My game is a work in progress so I'm hoping the work will pay off soon. I have good success here so hopefully it will continue for the rest of the tournament."

Brown, who has committed to a full season on the PBA50 Tour this year after bowling eight events in 2015, had games of 225, 268, 233, 213, 279, 228, 234 and 246.

2015PBAPeteWeber.jpg 2016PBA50AmletoMonacelli.jpg After taking last week off, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (left) of St. Ann, Mo., who is trying to extend his record of four consecutive PBA50 Tour titles, finished the first round in third with a 1,917 pinfall. He bowled games of 226, 279, 289, 247, 246, 254, 206 and 170.

Defending champion Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli (right) of Venezuela, who is trying for his second consecutive win of the season after winning in Fountain Valley, struggled finishing 30th with a 1,746 pinfall.

Rounding out the top five after the first round were Mark McCreary of Livermore, Calif., in fourth with 1,899, and Craig Miller of Tracy, Calif., in fifth with 1,896.

Second round qualifying continues Tuesday which will be followed by match play on Wednesday. Once match play is concluded, the top five players will advance to the stepladder finals scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PT.

The Northern California Classic is streamed live on PBA's online bowling channel Xtra Frame.
