Heading into the Professional Women's Bowling Association Greater Detroit Open on Saturday, second-round leader Rocio Restrepo of Colombia really wanted to nail down the top spot for the television show.
For the second consecutive day, Restrepo cranked it up for the final few games to lead her match-play group and claim the No. 1 seed for the PWBA Greater Detroit Open TV show. The stepladder finals will be taped June 26 during the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship and will air Tuesday, July 19, on CBS Sports Network.
Pictured above are the finalists of the PWBA Greater Detroit Open. L-R Rocio Restrepo, Sin Li Jane, Stefanie Johnson and Tannya Roumimper.
After 18 games, Restrepo was in second overall, trailing Stefanie Johnson (right) of Grand Prairie, Texas, by 24 pins. But Restrepo closed out match play with games of 235, 279 and 234 to win her group and make her second TV show of the season.
"I'm really happy with the way I finished; I got the job done," said Restrepo, who lost to Liz Johnson in the opening television stepladder match of the PWBA Las Vegas Open.
"I knew I needed to put something together toward the end. I just wanted to take the No. 1 seed. I like that position better than having to climb the whole ladder. You are in a position to have more chances and get breaks (from a lower seed), but at No. 1 you just have to win one match. And I'm excited for that."
Restrepo said she felt she has been bowling well, but also felt she just hasn't caught any breaks.
"It finally happened this week, I got breaks when I needed them, and I committed and made shots when I needed them, too," Restrepo said. "I kept making shots and I put it together. That was important to me this week.
"I wasn't taking the last three games for granted and that really helped because that's where I got all my pins."
Also making her second TV appearance is Sin Li Jane (left) of Malaysia. Sin Li made the stepladder finals of the United States Bowling Congress Queens in Las Vegas but lost in the opening match.
"I told myself to just enjoy the game," Sin said. "I learned at the Wichita Open how the environment feels in match play. I just learned from my mistakes and applied my strengths."
Johnson, the 2015 PWBA Rookie of the Year, was second in her match-play group. She beat Brittany Smith of Des Moines, Iowa, in the Group A stepladder to earn the No. 3 seed for TV. Smith had advanced with a 163-133 victory over Natalie Cortese of Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
The final TV spot went to Indonesia's Tannya Roumimper (right), who took a 244-206 victory over Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California. Parkin reached the Group B stepladder final with a 235-221 victory over Mexico's Sandra Gongora.
Saturday's competition kicked off with a six-game block that narrowed the field from the 32 cashers to the top 12 players for round-robin match play.
The 12 finalists were split into two groups of six for match play, which consisted of six games including a final position round. The competitor with the highest pinfall total in each group earned a spot in the TV finals, and the next three highest in each group advanced to the group stepladder.
