Dominic Barrett three-peats as San Marino Open champion

    Englishman averages 255 in Eliminator finals to win his 12th career European Bowling Tour title and the third in a row in San Marino

    2016EBT09DominicBarrett2.jpgDominic Barrett of England averaged 255 in the eliminator finals of the Storm San Marino Open to win his 12th European Bowling Tour title and the third in a row in San Marino Sunday at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle.

    Barrett, who also own four titles on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour, entered the four-player eliminator round in third place along with fellow PBAer Martin Larsen of Sweden and two women, two-time EBT women's ranking leader, Joline Persson Planefors of Sweden and qualifying winner Sin Li Jane of Malaysia, who received eight pins handicap per game.

    2016WECMastersJolinePerssonPlanefors.jpgThe eliminator finals featured three one-game rounds with pinfall carrying over. The lowest-scoring player after each round was eliminated.

    Barrett and Sin Li came out of the commandingly posting games of 277 and 271, respectively. Larsen was more than 40 pins behind in third place with 229. Persson Planefors (right), a four-time European champion, who led the last round before the cut to the top 4 by averaging 244.17, managed only 205 to finish in fourth place. She received 2.400 Euro.

    2016EBT09MartinLarsen.jpg Larsen (left) led the second game with 237 for 466 two-game total, but was unable to make enough ground as Barrett had 232 and 509 and Sin Li added 220 for 491. Larsen, who was targeting to win his ninth EBT title, finished in third place, worth 3.300 Euro.

    Barrett sealed the victory with a 257 last game and 766 three-game total, eighty pins ahead of Sin Li, who closed with 195 and 686 total. She received 5.000 Euro for second place.

    As the top women based on the final standings, Si Li and Persson Planefors received 500 and 350 Euro bonusses, respectively. Rebecka Larsen of Sweden garnered 200 Euro bonus for finishing as the third-best woman.

Since the inception of the EBT in the year 2000, women have won at least one title in each season. With nine out of 16 events in the 2016 season in the books, a woman has still to win a title to keep the string alive.

    2016EBT09SanMarinoOpenLogo_small.jpg The Storm San Marino Open was the 9th stop of the 2016 European Bowling Tour and the first out of three EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The 12th edition was held July 9-17 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offered total prize fund of 62.050 Euro with 8.000 Euro going to the winner, 5.000 to the runner-up, 3.300 to the third and 2.400 to the fourth place finisher.

    Qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) ran from Saturday, July 9, through Saturday, July 17, and concluded with the Desperado Squad. The qualifying winner received a 1.000 Euro bonus.

    Women received 8 pins handicap each game (maximum is 300) throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour. The top three women based on the final standings earned 500, 350 and 200 Euro bonuses, respectively.

    Total 48 players advanced to the finals on Sunday, July 19, including the top 35 qualifiers plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 9-10, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 11-12, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 13-14, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad.

    The top 8 qualifiers received two byes and qualifiers 9-16 got a first-round bye. The other 32 players bowled four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who met qualifiers 9-16 in the second round. Those 24 bowled another four games from scratch to cut to the top 10, who joined the top eight in a six-game round before the cut to the top 4.

    The four finalists determined the winner in an eliminator-format finals which featured three one-game rounds. All four players bowled the opening game, with the lowest-scoring player being eliminated. In the two rounds to follow, the same "low man out" format applied, with pinfall carrying over. The last man standing was declared the champion.

    Immediately following the 12th San Marino Open is the 9th European Bowling Tour Masters, which will be contested on Monday, July 18, at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino.

    2016EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2016 European Bowling Tour currently consists of 16 tournaments in 11 countries featuring three "Platinum" events, three "Gold", four "Silver" and six "Satellite" events. All tournaments together offer total prize fund of roughly 850.000 Euro.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will be eligible to compete in the 10th EBT Masters May 29, 2017, at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

    The 2016 EBT commences with the 7th Track Dream-Bowl Palace Open by Erdinger, the 10th stop and the second out of three EBT "Gold" tournaments this season, which kicked off yesterday at 52-lane Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany. The finals will be held on Sunday, July 24.

    In a 9th and 10th frame roll-off for 10th place, Doyle (58) def. Fiorentino (45) and Larsen (40) to advance. Larsen and Fiorentino were ranked based on the higher three game total, 672 to 668, in Larsen's favor.
