Frilingos impressively wins first title in 2005 Australian Super 6 Series

George Frilingos from Queensland flew past Doug Bear, 537-327, in the championship match over two games total pinfall en route to win back-to-back titles in the AMF Queensland Cup at AMF Greenslopes in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. The tournament was the fourth stop of the 2005 Australian Super 6 Series. Frilingos, the 2004 point ranking leader, won his first title this season.
Frilingos, who led the field of 65 players after 12 games qualifying with a 235-average, slipped to second place in the semifinals with 4682, 20-game total and an average of 234,1. Ron Voukolos was 12 pins better with 4703 (235,15) to grab the No. 1 seed for the 8-player finals. Third place belonged to Kate Wilton, the only woman in the finals, with 4577 (228,85).
The Round of 8 went over four games total pinfall. The top 4 players with the highest 4-game total advanced to the next round. Frilingos used a 297-game to roll the highest block in the Round of 8 with 1004. Also advancing were #5 Michael Little, 958 #7 Doug Bear, 924 and #1 Voukolos, 884. All Queenslanders but Frilingos were eliminated.
Frilingos shot a 961, 4-game total in the Round of 4 to advance to the finals. Doug Bear finished the block with a 246-score to beat Frilingos by one pin with 962. World Masters Champion Little (896) and Voukolos (857) were eliminated an finished third and fourth, respectively.
Frilingos, who averaged 250 over his ten games in the finals, then put on a show and posted two big scores to cruise to the title. His 290-score in the first game gave him a 96-pin lead. Bear could not match the vigorous pace of the local favorite. Frilingos fired a 257 final game to finish with 537, 2-game pinfall, and to widen the lead to enormous 210 pins!
Frilingos walked away with the AUS$2,500 top prize (approx. US$1,890). Bear pocketed $2,000 for second, Little received $1,500 for third and Voukolos garnered $1,000 for fourth. Australian Super 6 Series will take a break before heading to Illawarra, NSW, for the AMF New South Wales Open, July 23-24. The season ends with the AMF South Pacific Classic at AMF Moorabbin in Melbourne, September 2-4.
