Thornton wins PTBC Eliminator in Tolworth

    Thurlby and Penny atop the ranking

    2006BTE12Top3.jpg Steve Thornton (center) won the PTBC Eliminator at Charrington Bowl in Tolworth, Surrey. The 2001 World Games champion in Mixed Doubles (with Kirsten Penny) averaged 238,57 over seven games round robin and compiled a 5-2 won-lost record to finish with 1820 pinfall total (30 bonus pins per victory).

    The top 8 players after 14 games advanced to the round robin starting from scratch. Thornton lost the first two matches with his low scores of 215 and 220, then won five consecutive matches with 233, 269, 237, 237 and 259 en route to earn the 360 British Pounds top prize.

Defending BTE ranking champion and current ranking leader Dominic Barrett (top right) was third with 1689. Former world and European champion Kirsten Penny (left) was the sole woman in the final finishing in seventh place with 1528 including 60 pins bonus and 35 pins handicap.

    Although Thornton won the tournament, he didn't get the maximum 120 ranking points as the first 8 games from the qualifying only counted towards the ranking. Qualifying leader Rob Thurlby and the top ranked women, Kirsten Penny (4th), won the ranking event.
