Barrett and Smith dominate in Burton Short & Long Singles

    2006BWCDominicBarrett_small.jpg Defending Brunswick Team England ranking champion Dominic Barrett led from start to finish in the Burton Short & Long Singles on November 19th en route to win his second ranking event this season.

    Averaging better than 226 for 17 games, he led the four games on short oil with 898, 10 pins ahead of Jon Zadel. On the long oil pattern, Barrett shot 916 to Steve Thornton's 884.

    In the round robin, Barrett won all nine games to finish 229 pins ahead of Thornton with Zadel a further 151 behind.

    Jemma_Smith_3169.jpg On the women's side, Jemma Smith also led from start to finish, winning the short element with 781, ahead of Vikki Burbridge 758. On long she shot 874 to Debbie Watson's 851. In the round robin final a late burst by Jenny Billingham and Lisa Gardner pushed Jemma to finish with a 245 game to seal the title.

    With the final event to go, Barrett leads the men's rankings with 840 points, 35 points ahead of Steve Thornton (805), the only player who has also won two ranking titles this season. Nick Froggatt is a distant third with 652.

    Jo Harries continued to lead the women's rankings with 855 pints, Second place belongs to Fiona Banks (820), with Katie Jowsey third (786) and Jemma Smith fourth (730).

    The 2007 Brunswick Team England will be announced in January. The men's and women's team will comprise players that have finished among the top 12 in the 2006 rankings and have played minimum eight events.

    The players will represent England in the Women's World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, and the men's European Championships in Vienna, Austria.
