Uotila wins qualifying in Brunswick Ballmaster Open
Finn Pasi Uotila finished the qualifying of the first event of the 2007 European Bowling Tour, the 37th Brunswick Ballmaster Open, atop the leaderboard of the 364-player field. The two-time Ballmaster champion (2000 and 2004) had games of 222, 267, 247, 205, 237 and 279 at Tali Bowling Stadium in Helsinki, Finland, for 1457 pinfall total, an average of 242.83. The Finns dominated the qualifying and occupied the first eleven places. Jussi Turtiainen was second with 1429 (238.17). 1999 Word Trios champions Ari Halme and Antti-Pekka Lax landed in third and foruth place with 1389 and 1388.
Kai Virtanen, BO champion in 1995, was fifth (1383), with 2001 BO champion Piritta Kantola (left, the last female champion) sixth (1382) and Jouni Helminen (right), the newly elected president of the Finnish Bowling Federation, in seventh (1382).
Rounding out the top 8 was tournament organizer and former World Ranking Masters champion Kimmo Lehtonen, BO winner in 2002, with 1374. Finn Jukka Poutiainen hit the cutoff number for 44th place with 1310, a 218.33 average. Toni Laine (pictured), Finland, posted the sole 300-game in qualifying in his sixth game but missed the cut for the top 44 in 88th place with 1261.
Mere eight foreigners made the top 44 in the 37th edition of the prestigious event. Swedish international Peter Ljung (left) was the top-ranked foreigner in 12th position with 1358. Three of his team members, World Doubles champions Robert Andersson (32st) and Martin Larsen ((34th) as well as Tobias Karlsson (42nd) also survived the prelims.
Three players from England are still in the race, European ranking champion Paul Moor (40th), Stuart Williams (21st), the No. 4 in Europe and multiple World and European champion Kirsten Penny (right, 15th). The sole non-European player in the finals is Australian Andrew Frawley (18th). Ironically, the foreigners dominated the one-game 'Desperado Squad' and took the four remaining spots. 1. Nikolay Ovchinnikov, Latvia, 257 2. Patricia Schwarz, Germany, 254 including 8 pins handicap 3. Leonidas Maragkos, Greece, 246 and 4. Paco Rodriques, Spain, 244.
The top 44 from the qualifying plus the top 4 from the one-game Desperado Squad (seeded 45-48) advanced to the finals on Sunday, January 14. The top 8 qualifiers will bypass the first two rounds of the finals and meet the top 8 after two rounds of five games in single elimination match play.
The winners of the Round of 16 and the Round of 8 will be determined in best-of-.five games format. The semi-finals and the title match will be one-game matches. The winner of the 54.000 EBT 'Major' tournament will walk away with the 10.000 Euro top prize.
There is no other tournament in Europe which is tougher to win for a foreigner. Since 1997, all winners came from Finland. The last non-Finnish bowlers, who triumphed in Helsinki, were Norwegians Tore Torgersen (1996) and Erik Garder (1989) and Swedes Mats Karlsson (1992) and Tomas Leandersson (1991). The first Ballmaster Open champion was the late Josef Wiener, Sweden, in 1971.

Uotila leads the field into final qualifying day at Brunswick Ballmaster Open
Pasi Uotila finished the fifth of eleven qualifying squads Friday afternoon with a 279-game en route to overtake the lead in the 37th Brunswick Ballmaster Open at Tali Bowling Stadium in Helsinki, Finland. The two-time Ballmaster champion (2000 and 2004) started his six-game series with 222, 267, 247, 205 and 237 for 1457 pinfall total, an average of 242.83. Jussi Turtiainen, who led the squad after five games, closed out his series with 233 to move into second position with 1429 (238.17). Previous leader Kai Virtanen, BO champion in 1995, slipped to third place (1383) with Jouni Helminen, the newly elected president of the Finnish Bowling Federation, in fourth (1382).
The picture shows Kai Virtanen with the Ford Fiesta, which can be won in a side tournament. Kai is the director the '300 autoXtra' organized by bowling club 'Grankulla Bowlare'. You need a 300-game to win the car. If more than one 300 autoXtra contestant manages to roll a perfect game, they will continue with a one ball roll-off until the tie is broken. Jari Ratia, Finland, has the high game of the tournament thus far with 280.
2001 Ballmaster champion Piritta Kantola, one of two women who have won the tournament since the men's and women's divisions were combined in 1992, started Squad 7 with a sub-par game but averaged nearly 230 over the last five games to jump into fifth place with 1382 including handicap.
Tournament organizer and former World Ranking Masters champion Kimmo Lehtonen (right), who won the tournament in 2002, had a high game of 247 and a low game of 216 to sit in sixth place with 1374. Tony Ranta, all from Finland, slipped to seventh with 1369.
Rounding out the top 8 is Petteri Salonen (left), all from Finland, with 1365. The 4-time European Champion rollercoastered through the sixth qualifying squad with high games of 246, 257, 230, 268 and low games of 170 and 194.
With 321 players in the books and the final four qualifying squads to go, Peter Ljung (right) from Sweden is the top-ranked foreigner thus far in ninth position with 1358.
There is no other tournament in Europe which is tougher to win for a foreigner. Since 1997, all winners came from Finland. The last non-Finnish bowler, who triumphed in Helsinki, was Norwegian Tore Torgersen (left) back in 1996. The first Ballmaster Open champion was the late Josef Wiener, Sweden, in 1971. The top 44 from the qualifying (cut is currently 1302) plus the top 4 from the one-game Desperado Squad (seeded 45-48) will advance to the finals on Sunday, January 14.
