Brian Knauer of Federalsburg, Md., doesn't necessarily think of himself as a superstitious person, but no one could fault him for rethinking that position after he fell one pin short of perfection at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

Knauer opened his doubles set with 11 consecutive strikes, but a wobbly 8-pin on lane 13 left him with 299 and a pin short of the eighth perfect game of this year's event. The 38-year-old left-hander followed the near-perfect effort with 234 and 178 for a 711 total.

"When I let go of that last ball, I thought for sure it was a strike, and so did the others around me," Knauer said. "Unfortunately, the 8-pin on lane 13 wobbled twice, but refused to go down. Maybe it really was unlucky."

Making his sixth appearance at the USBC Open Championships, Knauer came to Reno hoping to eclipse the career-high 1,910 all-events total he posted at the 2006 event in Corpus Christi, Texas, but he fell short again with 627 in team and 556 in singles for 1,894.

In addition to some local tournaments, Knauer bowls in two leagues each week, but credited part of his success Wednesday to new bowling shoes, which vastly improved his footing.

"None of my previous 300 attempts could even compare to having the front 11 at the Open Championships," said Knauer, who owns Kegler's Korner Pro Shop in Millsboro, Del., just a few miles from his home. "But being here is a completely different atmosphere, which made me more excited than nervous."

Presenting sponsors for the 2007 USBC Open Championships are Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev. Other participating sponsors are Kegel, official lane maintenance provider, Sands Regency Casino and Hotel, official brackets sponsor and supporting sponsors Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa and Harrah's Casino and Hotel.
