20067USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg New leaders emerged in the Classic Doubles and Singles events at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships on Friday at AMF Carolina Lanes.

Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Susan Jeziorski-Smith of Buffalo, N.Y., took the lead in Classic Doubles, combining for 1,385. Meanwhile, Tiffany Stanbrough of Oklahoma City moved into the Classic Singles lead with 745.

In Classic Doubles, Jeziorski-Smith led the pair with a 711 series on games of 236, 237 and 238. Johnson added a 674 series with games of 212, 257 and 205. Wendy Chai and Esther Cheah of Malaysia previously held the lead with 1,314.

Johnson, a 20-time Professional Women's Bowling Association titlist, and Jeziorski-Smith have bowled together since 1994 in the Women's Championships with a previous high finish of fourth in doubles in 1997.

"Hopefully this will be the year," Johnson said. "We communicate well as a team and that plays an important part in our success."

Jeziorski-Smith, five months pregnant with her first child, said she wanted to do well for her teammate.

"Until now, I really have had a horrendous year so this has been a pleasant surprise," Jeziorski-Smith said. "I told Liz, I hope something good is going to happen and after a ball change, I got my act together."

Johnson, who finished second in the 2006 USBC Queens had a successful season bowling on the Denny's Professional Bowlers Association Tour in 2006-07, qualifying for all but two tour stops by earning berths through pro tour qualifiers. She best finish came in Buffalo in November when she finished in the top eight. She has one previous Women's Championships title, winning the 1998 Classic All-Events title.

Stanbrough, a four-time PWBA titlist, edged previous leader Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo., who rolled 739 on Thursday.

After games of 257 and 223, Stanbrough started her third game with four strikes before leaving an open in the fifth frame. Unaware of what she needed for the lead, she rolled the next seven strikes, ending with 265.

"I take pride in bowling well in pressure situations but I really didn't know what I needed," Standbrough said. "I'd like to think that it wouldn't have made a difference but you never know. Stringing seven strikes to take the lead is pretty tough to do."

Stanbrough also paired with 2006 USBC Queens champion Shannon Pluhowsky to move into second in Classic Doubles with 1,369 and moved into third place in Classic All-Events with 2,087.

Florida bowler takes All-Events, Singles leads in Division 1

Veronica Minotti of Oviedo, Fla., virtually disappeared from competitive bowling following the birth of two daughters. Recent success in Florida and a solid performance in all-events competition at the 2007 USBC Women's Championships has Minotti rethinking the amount of time she spends on her game.

Minotti, 40, took the lead in Division 1 All-Events on Thursday with 1,876 and also moved into the top spot in Division 1 Singles with 676. She added 543 in team and 648 in doubles to her all-events total.

Minotti, who bowled collegiately at the University of Miami and earlier this year won the all-events title at the Orlando City Championships with 2,006, put her game on hold to have children.

"I basically stopped bowling competitively, but have been bowling league every other week," Minotti said. "The Orlando tournament showed me I could still compete and it just carried over to the Women's Championships."

The Women's Championships, which is the largest participatory sporting event in the world for women, will continue through July 2 at two suburban Charlotte bowling centers. Northcross Lanes in Huntersville, N.C., will host team squads each day while doubles and singles competition will take place at AMF Carolina Lanes in Matthews, N.C.

The USBC Women's Championships is sponsored by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., as well as Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider.
