20067USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg Perfect strangers joined forces Saturday to take over first place at the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.

Vivian Thompson of Blowing Rock, N.C., and Angela Anstrom of Charlotte, N.C., shot a 981 series, earning the top spot in Division 4 Doubles competition at AMF Carolina Lanes in Matthews, N.C. Thompson fired a 579 series while Anstrom contributed 402.

"I think the key was finding my line, remaining calm and not letting any kind of pressure be applied to us," Thompson said. "We treated it just like we were bowling in a league."

The two women, competing in their first Women's Championships, hadn't met until the team competition at Northcross Lanes in Huntersville, N.C., the previous day.

"Not knowing each other didn't phase us," Thompson said. "We worked well as a team. We were just focused on doing well each game. After the first game we were pretty happy. We thought we had a chance to challenge for the lead."

Added Anstrom, "I was a little nervous at first, but I was more concerned about making sure I focused and did well."

The duo leads Joyce Clark of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Paula Murray of Snellville, Ga., who shot 939 and are currently in second place.

"I feel great that we're in first place," Anstrom said. "I'm so proud of how well we did. I am extremely excited about it!"

In 2006, Dana Knapp of Norcatur, Kan., and Sherri Hachmeister of Lenora, Kan., won the Women's Championships Division 4 Doubles (260 average and under) with 974.

"If we won it would be hard to put into words how I'd feel," Thompson said. "It's almost surreal the way that it happened. I am very honored and humbled by the whole experience."

The Women's Championships, which is the largest participatory sporting event in the world for women, will continue through July 2. Northcross Lanes hosts the team event while doubles and singles competition takes place at AMF Carolina Lanes in Matthews, N.C.

The USBC Women's Championships is sponsored by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., as well as Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider.
