Darren Cundy wins Ilkeston Knockout Open

    05/07/07

    2007 Brunswick Team England #5

    Zadel, Smith win the rankings

There were two parts to this event – an 8 game qualifier for Team England points and a 24 person knockout over 3 games total pinfall and five rounds possibly) needed to win the title.

2007BTE04JonZadel_small.jpg 2007BTE05JemmaSmith_small.jpg Ranking points first - Jon Zadel (left) bagged his second title in a row with 1763 on this testing condition laid down by Rob Thurlby. Darren Cundy was second only four pins back, while ex-junior Matt Chamberlain grabbed third on 1730.

In the ladies, honors went to Jemma Smith (right) on 1698, with Vikki Burbridge 1629 second – the only other lady over par. Jo Harries returned after injury to take third on three under.

2007BTE05FinalistswithWendyThurlby.jpg Ladies have 7 pins per game bonus throughout. The top 8 seeds sat out the first round of knockout and the biggest shock of Round 2 was Zadel’s defeat by Phil Waldram. Jo Harries did for him in the quarters as experienced match players came to the fore – Mark Smith disposing of Matt Chamberlain, Jemma Smith beating Nicki Ainge and Darren Cundy knocking out Norman Hamed.

Mark cruised past Jo in the semis, but the other Surrey county lady Jemma could and should have beaten Darren, but failed at the death. The final was nip and tuck all the way with Darren just edging it by 22 pins thanks to another storming finale.

From front left, clockwise: Ilkeston champion Darren Cundy, Jemma Smith, bowl manager Wendy Thurlby, Jo Harries and Mark Smith.
